One of the interesting things about how we choose online slots is that we often go for games that have specific types of bonus features, even though they all give more or less the same amount of value relative to the value the normal pay table plays. Rainbow Riches Pick n Mix by WMS is a bit different because it puts the power of determining which bonus features show up in the hands of the players. This is an atypical way of handling bonus rounds, but it's very effective since the customization adds a ton to the gameplay.

Basic Format

On the most basic level, this is a five-reel video slot that uses three rows of symbols and 20 paylines. Coins start at $0.01 each, and they go as high as a whooping $25 each to give the game a betting range of $0.20 to $500 per spin. This is a pretty wide betting range, and it allows a ton of players at different stakes to take part in playing.

Bonus Selection

The main feature of this game is the ability to select your own bonus rounds. You can choose one, two or three available bonus options from a total of five that are available, and those are the only bonuses that will come up in the game. You have to choose at least one to play.

The Road to Riches bonus gives you a mini-game where you proceed along a certain path to pick up multipliers and instant wins.

The Pots of Gold bonus pays out different random winnings based on pots of gold, silver and bronze.

The Free Spins bonus pays up to 30 free spins to you with chances to re-trigger them. The Free Spins symbol acts as a wild during your free turns as well, and there's a better set of reels used with a higher payout rate.

The Cash Crop bonus gives you instant wins with multipliers where you get to decide a few times if you want a different prize or if you want to collect.

Finally, there is the Magic Toadstool bonus that gives you a pick a box style game where you choose from 24 toadstools to win cash prizes.

All of these are triggered with three more of of the matching symbols, and four or more gives you a better version of the feature for more value. We recommend playing with the free spins feature on because it shows up stacked on the first reel, making it easier to trigger than the other features.

Regular Payouts

There are wilds on the reels, but they don't get their own payouts. Instead, five of the Rainbow Riches slot symbol pays out 500x, the top win in the game, and four gives you 400x. Five of the A also pays 400x, and so does five of the blue K symbol. The green Q, orange J and purple 10 all pay out 200x for five of a kind.

You'll only find six regular paying symbols on the reels, and that's interesting because it's one of the fewest number of regular symbols we've seen in a video slot. The significance of this is that it allows you to get paid more often since the symbols should line up more often than they would if you had, for example, 12 different symbols you were trying to line up into winning combinations.

Bonus Selection Strategy

As far as which bonuses you should play with, it's hard to say. We do definitely recommend playing with the free spins feature activated because it's the only bonus symbol that shows up stacked anywhere. The stacked free spins symbols on the first reel give you much better chances of hitting the feature, and the free spins feature definitely offers a significant amount of value itself.

Aside from that, you may even want to just leave the one free spins feature on and keep the rest activated, at least until you get used to how the slot plays.

Our Thoughts

This game is pretty straightforward other than the bonus selection setup. We really like any level of customization that we find in online slots because we believe that's the next major point of innovation in the industry, and it's cool that the Rainbow Riches Pick n Mix slot offers such flexibility in the bonus rounds you can get.

We would have liked to see more variation in how those bonus features work, since all of them but the free spins are basically thinly-veiled variations of instant win games. WMS is definitely on to something with this bonus selection idea, but their implementation of it wasn't very strong, and it makes the game as a whole suffer quite a bit.
