There is no shortage of slots in the industry that follow a few different types of themes that tend to get used a lot. Egyptian-themed titles are a good example of this. The bottom line is that to produce a game that uses one of these types of titles will require the developer to really stand out with it if they want it to get any level of popularity whatsoever. BetSoft is very aware of this, and that's why they put so much effort into making the Legend of the Nile slot have a different kind of look and experience than what players are most likely used to.

Betting and Layout

It's not hard to notice right away that the layout is a bit different than most slots. There are six vertical columns and a total of six horizontal rows, so there are 36 symbols showing on each spin. Along these lines, you don't have paylines, but wins are given when you make a cluster of at least four symbols that are touching horizontally or vertically.

Your bets are centered around 30 coins a spin. You can multiply that total bet by up to five for a total of up to 150x coins per spin, and the coin sizes themselves start off at the $0.02 level, so the minimum bet per spin is $0.60. Coins are worth as much as $1 apiece, and that leads to a maximum bet size of $150 per turn. It's clear that both low stakes players and high rollers can find wagers that work for their bankrolls with this spread.

Ra, Anubis and Isis

Ra, Anubis and Isis are the three main characters in this game, and they are three key deities from Egyptian mythology. Isis is wearing a red gem on her head, Anubis looks like a purple jackal, and Ra is green with a bird's head and beak.

Anubis and Isis behave similarly in this game. You'll get spots added to the Anubis Trial or the Isis Trail on the meters on the left-hand side of the reels whenever you make a cluster win with either of these symbols. They will run up to 5,000x for 20+ of Isis or Anubis for some pretty big payouts, but that's not the only way you can win with these two symbols.

If you fill up either of these trial meters, then you'll get a set of free spins. During these free spins, the Anubis or Isis symbol, respectively, gets upgraded to give even better payouts. These upgraded symbols can pay out up to 20,000x for 20 or more in a cluster, which is a tremendous prize.

Ra Power Bar and More

Ra, the green bird man, works a little differently. You can get power added to the Ra Power Bar for his wins much like you get for the other two. However, the free spins come much quicker, and you can also hit a jackpot prize that's listed above the reels on the left-hand side with this symbol. If you get 20 points on this power bar at the same time, then you'll pick up the progressive jackpot. This is a cool way of incorporating several different free spins modes into the same game without them all just being copies of each other.

Exploding Wins

Something critical to understand about the gameplay in this slot is the exploding wins feature. When you hit a winning combination, you'll pick up the payout, and then those winning symbols explode. This allows existing symbols to fall down into place, and it makes it so new symbols can fall down into the empty spots that are left behind. You then get chances for even more cluster wins, and the process continues until there are no new payouts to have.

Important Payouts

The other two character symbols for the pharaoh and king payouts can get up to 3,000x for clusters of 20 or more. You can also earn 1,500x for 20+ clusters of the eye of Ra or the anhk (cross-like symbol). The bird, the tree and the brown wave symbol round out the bottom end of the payouts with maximum wins worth between 300x and 450x for 20 and up.

In Summary

This game is excellent all-around. BetSoft did a really good job with Legend of the Nile, and it's easily one of the top games in the industry that uses an Egyptian concept. The multiple meters and ways to get free spins is pretty immersive, and having the upgraded symbols in those features is an approach that we can't remember having seen before. It's definitely something we'd like to see more of, and the progressive jackpot is just the icing on the cake.

If there's a weakness in this game, it's that the action can be a bit overwhelming for players who aren't familiar with the game mechanics. This takes some getting used to, but it's definitely worth it.
