Holidays are a common theme for online slots. There are several different games that have been developed over the years for each of the major holidays, and many of the minor ones, and Halloween is one of the most common themes for these types of games. Microgaming's Peek-a-Boo 5 Reels is a game that offers up a lot of Halloween fun with enough of a twist that it manages to really stand out quite a bit from other games based around this holiday.

Format and Layout

Players have 40 paylines of action spread across five reels and four rows in this game. This is a little different than the typical five-reel, three-row format that you normally see, but it offers lots of extra value, as will become apparent in the free spins bonus feature. The available bet sizes in this game start at $0.40 per spin with $0.01 coins, and they go all the way up to the $100 level for each spin. High rollers and penny players alike will find stakes that suit them in this game.

The Ghost Meter

The first thing many players notice right off of the bat is that there's a meter along the right-hand side of the screen. This meter is based around collecting ghosts. The kid with the ray gun is a symbol that appears on all reels, but when he appears on the center reel, he'll zap up to one ghost per reel. These ghosts fill the ghost meter by one spot apiece, and once you reach at least ten of them, you'll trigger the free spins bonus round.

Free Spins Bonus Feature

The free spins feature is pretty important because there's a lot of value that comes from it. It's also pretty easy to keep up with how close you are to triggering the feature because of how it uses the ghost meter (which saves between playing sessions so you never miss out on value). This 40-payline game becomes a 1,024-ways format game for the duration of the free spins, and you get one free turn for every unit you've filled the ghost meter. This means you can get at least 10 free spins and as many as 13 free spins on each bonus round.

There's also a respin feature available during the free spins. The way this works is that you get an extra shot at bigger wins if you get three of a kind or four of a kind with a re-spin on the fourth and/or fifth reels. To make this respin feature mean even more, there's a super stacked wild on both of these reels during the free spins.

Wild Symbols and Top Wins

The following wins are based on a $2 bet, and changing your bet size will cause the payouts to scale in proportion.

The largest wins are available for the Peek-a-Boo wild symbol. It's stacked normally on all reels, though as we mentioned above, it's super-stacked on the fourth and fifth reels during the free spins bonus round to give better odds. A $50 payout is the top win for five of this symbol, though you can also pick up $10 for four of a kind in wilds. Next is the kid with the ray gun who earns $25 for five of a kind. He's the same kid responsible for zapping ghosts with his ray gun when he lands on the middle reel.

The red ghost and orange ghost pay $15 and $10, respectively, for five of a kind. You'll also have a shot at $7.50 and $5 wins with the green and blue ghosts when you get five along similar lines. The chocolate coin pays $4, and the candy in wrappers pays $3.50 when you get five on the reels.

The bottom end of the payout schedule starts with the three hard candy (orange, purple and green) that gets a $3 payout, and $2.50 is earned for five of the mints. The lowest wins are for the candy hearts, graves and circles that are good for a $2 payout when you get five.

Overview

The graphics in the Peek-a-Boo 5 Reels slot might seem a bit backwards to some, but they're more or less the HD version of the original Peek-a-Boo three-reel classic slot, and when you realize that, the graphical appeal makes a lot more sense. As far as features and gameplay goes, this game has an atypical way to award free spins that drives a lot of the gameplay, and the hit-rate is pretty high, so the action stays strong throughout the whole experience.

Overall, we recommend this game for fans of video slots because of the action and the way play is pressed forward with the kid hunting ghosts on the reels.
