Some stories have been used several times to create online slots, and the story of King Kong is one of those. While it might not be as popular as the seemingly never-ending stream of games based on Egyptian themes, it's definitely something that you see fairly often. TopGame's Mighty Kong is yet another title that uses this concept as its central focus.

It's pretty easy to understand that if you want to make a successful game that's based around a theme that's used a lot, then it has to stand out quite a bit. We're not quite sure if Mighty Kong does that, but keep reading to find out for yourself.

Format and Layout

This slot has five reels, three rows and 50 paylines. This is a somewhat atypical format in that it uses four rows with 50 paylines since we normally see 50 paylines used with three rows (and 40 paylines used with four rows, for example), for whatever reason. With that having been said, you can pick from coins that go from $0.01 to $0.50 apiece, and that makes the minimum bet size per spin a low $0.50. You can also bet up to 10 coins per payline, and that makes the maximum bet per spin $250, which is pretty high.

Payout Schedule

Let's start by looking at the high-ranking payouts. You have the redheaded woman who gives you 1,000x for five of a kind, and there's also the guy staring blankly at you for 500x. The captain with the captain's hat and pipe gives 250x for five of a kind, and you can earn 150x from the guy with the eye patch as well. The kid in the glasses and safari hat earns you a solid 100x win for five on an activated payline.

All five of these symbols only pay for three of a kind or more. This is worth pointing out because some titles by TopGame have a number of two-of-a-kind wins, but this isn't one of them.

For the lower wins, there are stylized A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols. These look like they were taken straight from the title font of just about any King Kong movie ever made. They fit the theme, but because the theme has been used so many times, they come across as a bit generic. You'll get 80x for five of a kind of the A or K symbol. It's worth noting that the 60x four of a kind win for these symbols isn't bad at all either. A 75x payout is good for five of the Q, J or 10 symbols, and it's 50x for four of a kind of any of the lowest three symbols in the game.

Expanding Wild Symbol

On the middle reel of this game, you'll see a wild symbol show up at times. It's the only reel that has a wild, so there are no particular payouts for wild symbols only. However, if expanding the wild will lead to further wins for you, then it will always expand. It doesn't expand otherwise so that it doesn't waste your time and excite you for no reason, which is somewhat considerate.

Free Spins Feature

King Kong himself is the key to the free spins feature. The way this works is that there are scattered King Kong symbols on every reel, and if you get three or more of them anywhere on the reels, you'll get a set of free spins. You can choose to pick up five free spins with an 8x multiplier, eight free spins with a 5x multiplier, 13 free spins with a 3x multiplier or 40 free spins with a 1x multiplier.

It's critical to point out that taking the 13 free spin option here is the worst choice you can make because it gives you a bit less value than the other three options. The 40-spin, 8-spin and 5-spin options, with their respective multipliers, all give you the same amount of value. However, the 13-spin option with a 3x multiplier gives you slightly less value, so make sure you avoid it.

Our Thoughts

TopGame has a reputation for throwing together games based on a somewhat generic theme, and Mighty Kong fits into that category well enough. The free spins feature is cool because you can pick between multiple options, and the expanding wild on the center reel might give you some extra wins here and there, but overall, this is a fairly boring game with a high volatility and a relatively low hit-rate. The graphics do nothing to excite the player, and the gameplay is lacking to a large degree because, frankly, nothing about this game stands out on any level.
