BetSoft has a thing for stepping outside of the box on occasion, and they've done that in a major way with the Giovanni's Gems video slot. This game has a much larger layout than what you normally see in the genre, and it's paired with a completely different way to win. The graphics of this game are absolutely outstanding, and you could put them up against the visuals of any title in the industry and see that it fairs well. Aside from that, the gameplay is awesome, and it's a very strong title overall.
Format and Layout
You'll find that this game does not use a traditional reel structure. Instead, there is a grid of seven columns and seven rows of symbols on each spin, and they fall into place to create the play area. Betting is set up based on 30 coins per spin, but you can multiply that by up to five in the spirit of being able to bet up to five coins per "payline" as far as the betting is concerned. Coin sizes span from $0.02 to $1 per turn, so you'll get overall betting sizes of $0.60 to $150 per spin available.
Wins are determined in a different way as well. Whenever you create a cluster of symbols, typically five or more, you'll get wins in this game instead of lining up matching symbols on paylines. Clusters are connected groups of identical symbols that are adjacent to each other vertically, horizontally or both. Symbols that are diagonal from each other only do not create clusters in this game.
Cascading Wins Feature
The first feature that impacts the gameplay the most is the Cascading Wins Feature. Whenever you get a winning cluster, those symbols will disappear as they pay out to you on the screen. New symbols will fall into place in what amounts to an avalanche-style respin at no cost to you, and that gives you chances to get extra wins. What this means in terms of practical gameplay is that you'll hit more multi-line wins on individual spins than you'd expect on average, and that lowers the volatility and increases the excitement of the game quite a bit.
The Giovanni Symbol
Giovanni (from the title of the game) is the man standing to the left dressed in a ranger style. He appears on the reels and will give you wins for three of a kind or more. A cluster of 14-17 of him earns 100x, a win worth 200x is yours for a cluster of 18-24, and 25+ will get you a 300x win. Like all of the rest of the payouts in this game, these wins are multiplied by your entire wager.
This symbol also helps you to get free spins with five or more on the game board. You'll always get at least seven free spins, and the more of Giovanni you get, the more free spins you earn. He does not appear in the free spins feature, however, and you can earn up to a maximum of 50 free spins with this symbol.
Coal and Diamond Symbols
A cool feature that you'll see happen sometimes has to do with the coal symbols in the regular spins and the diamond symbols in the free spins. If you get a winning combination beside of some coal, it will turn into diamonds. These diamonds are scatter symbols, and you'll get paid for any number of them that appear on the reels. Players earn between 12x for one of these symbols to a total of 3,000x for 25 or more of them.
A lot of the value in the free spins comes from the fact that these diamonds just appear there normally instead of having to be earned through the coal symbols as described above.
Important Wins and Payouts
Aside from the diamond symbol, the highest-ranking symbols are the sack of gems and the torch. The sack symbol is worth up to 1,500x for 25 or more, but you can also earn 1,000x for 18-24 of them in a single cluster. Clusters of 18-24 of the torch pay 700x, and clusters of 25 or more of them get you a 1,000x win. The pickaxe is the next-highest symbol, and it gets you 500x or 750x for 18-24 or 25+ of them in a cluster, respectively.
Along similar lines, the emeralds will get you 400x or 600x as their top pays, and you can pick up as much as 300x or 500x with the rubies. The sapphire is blue and pays 250x for 25+, and you'll earn 200x for 25 or more of the amethyst, which is purple. Finally, the citrine gets you 150x for 25 or more, and 25+ of the goal pays a simple 100x. Remember with the coal that you'll get diamond payouts as well as we described above.
Overview
