A lot of efforts have been made over the more than 20 years of the online slots industry to provide players with titles that have more in-depth gameplay and a stronger degree of replay value. Nordic Heroes by IGT is a good example of a game that manages to achieve that without losing its connection to what makes it a video slot in the first place. While a lot of games have tried to tie in leveling mechanics and other RPG-like elements, many of them have failed. IGT's viking-themed slot here, however, has done it particularly well.

Game Format

The essentials of the game's format are pretty normal. This is a five-reel, three-row game with 30 paylines. Coins range from $0.01 to $20 apiece, and your betting range is $0.30 to $600 per spin. That's a pretty incredible range of bet sizes available, and so everyone from the penny stakes to the high rollers will have a reasonable bet size to use in this game.

Character and Level Selection

In the top-left corner of the game, you'll start off seeing Thora. She's a female archer type that reflects the rogue or ranged classes from RPG games, and she has a selection of available weapons for the bonus feature below her. You can choose her to select another character, but you have to unlock them by advancing through the levels by killing enemies. More on that below.

Additionally, you can click the "Forest of Fortune" level icon, which looks much like a compass, in the top-right corner to go to a level select screen. Along the same lines, you can choose other worlds that have to be unlocked by raising your levels through fighting enemies in the bonus feature.

There are eight levels for two characters in this game. Each level you unlock adds extra attacks, evasive bonuses and other goodies for the battle bonus feature. You can also increase your overall payout rate along these lines.

Game Payouts

Depending on the character you've chosen and the level you're playing in, the symbols that are available to you change a little bit, but the base payouts are essentially the same. To start off, you'll have a 1,500x top payout available for five of the wild symbol. The secondary wild payout is 300x for four. The character you're playing as will also give a 1,000x secondary jackpot when you get five of a kind. The characters two weapons will earn you 500x and 250x, depending on what they are, for five of a kind.

There are five lower symbols as well, but a couple of them vary. The top two start off being the tree and the mushrooms for a 200x and 150x payout apiece for five of a kind, respectively. The other three are 120x and a couple of 100x wins for five on an activated payline.

Battle Bonus Feature

The battle symbol with two swords crossed show up on the first, third and fifth reels, and it does not show up during the bonus feature. When you get three of them, you'll be given an instant win of twice the size of your bet along with some free spins. After each free spin, you'll be awarded battle reels that give you a chance to either do your own damage, stun your enemy that you're facing or protect yourself against an attack. You'll keep going until you kill three monsters or until you're defeated.

During the free spins and Battle Bonus feature, you're going to be hit with some extra ways to win. One of these ways is extra wilds added to the reels during the first round. These become 2x wild multipliers in the second round and 4x wild multipliers in the third round. Obviously, these will add quite a bit of value to the free spins during the Battle Bonus feature, and it's where the majority of the value comes from in this game.

Extra symbols are also added to the bonus feature depending on which level you're in. They vary from 2x to 10x your entire bet, and they're all scattered, so they add several small and medium-sized wins to your overall score.

Overview

IGT has done an amazing job with this Nordic Heroes, and we don't just go saying that about every game out there. This slot might have the most depth that we've ever seen in an RPG-influenced online casino game, and with its Battle Bonus feature, you'll have a lot of reason to keep coming back for more. We would have liked to see more characters and levels, but the amount of depth shown for each of the characters and levels that are in the game are already far beyond what's available anywhere else.
