If you're familiar with the online slot world on any level, then you'll notice that there are hundreds if not thousands of slots that have used various types of Asian-inspired themes. iSoftBet is aware of this as well, so with their Pearl of the Orient game, they made sure that they stuck out from the crowd in a few different ways.
First off, the graphics are top-notch. Instead of going for gaudy 3-D options, they instead went for extremely well-drawn icons that incorporate lions, dragons, gold tokens and beautiful geishas. On the gameplay side of things, they use a combination of popular and fresh features with a balanced pay table with lots of mid-level wins available.
Betting and Format
The format for this title has five reels with three horizontal rows of symbols. It's a pretty standard grid, and there are 10 paylines. Despite the fact that there are just 10 lines to play on, you cannot change how many of them are active at any given time (not that you would want to in the first place), and you will only get paid on them from left to right. Of course, this does not apply to the scatter symbols.
Your payouts in this game are all based on a number of coins, and you'll be betting 10 total coins on each spin, one for each payline. Coin sizes can be chosen to range from $0.01 at the low end to $1 apiece at the high end. This means you can pick bet sizes from $0.10 to $10 per spin, which is wide enough for most players, but high rollers might find the upper end of things a bit lacking.
Wild Geisha Symbols
There are two symbols that are easily seen as the most important in this game. The first is the geisha symbol. She shows up as a wild, and we want to point out just how well-designed the symbol itself is from the point of aesthetics.
This wild symbol shows up on the second, third and fourth reels only, so you won't be able to get any specific payouts just for getting wilds on a payline. However, you get a lot of extra value from the fact that it expands to cover the entire reel every single time that it appears. It substitutes for everything but the scatter.
Scattered Dragon Yin Yang Symbols
The other most important symbol is the scatter. This is a yin yang symbol that's gold and green with a dragon and a bird. They show up on all five reels, and they are responsible for a win that's tied for the largest payout that you can get in this game with 500x for five of a kind.
A win of 200x can be yours for four of a kind, and a 20x prize is won for three of a kind as well. It's important to note that these wins don't require the scatter to show up anywhere in particular or on certain reels to pay out.
Free Spins Mode
When you are able to land at least three of the scatter symbol on the game board, you'll get a set of 12 free spins. For each wild symbol you get during this free spins mode, you'll get extra free turns added to your total. Moreover, they will upgrade high-ranking symbols to something that's worth more to make it easier to get higher-level payouts.
Payouts and Prizes
The golden dragon head is worth 500x for five of a kind as the highest-paying regular symbol in this game. Things only drop off slightly to 400x for five of a kind combinations of the golden ingot, and you can get 300x for five of the golden frog as well.
The pair of lamps gets you a 200x win, which is the same as the 200x win for the pair of red boxes. Finally, the yellow A, red K, green Q and blue J symbols all reward players with 100x payouts. You'll notice that the spread from the largest win to the lowest is only 5-1, which is about as balanced as things can get, and that helps to contribute to the smooth gameplay with few big swings.
Our Thoughts
We like what iSoftBet has done with the Pearl of the Orient slot from a visual standpoint. The symbols all look great, and that helps to make this game pretty pleasing aesthetically. The gameplay is perfect for players who prefer low-volatility titles while still giving you some chances to get a lot of value from the free spins mode and the expanding wilds.
However, there's still a definite lack of depth in terms of features and gameplay from this title that keeps it from holding up against the best of the sub-genre, and that's its only real weakness.
