One of the things that Microgaming has done before that we really like is center a game around the type of experience they want the player to have. We really like this concept because it shows a higher level of game development and a bit of innovation in the industry. The Serenity slot is based on the premise of giving players a particularly calming experience with zen-like music, smooth graphics and sounds that will keep the player in a relaxed state. If you're a fan of chilling out and just enjoying a relaxing slot, then this game will probably appeal to you.
Game Format
This game uses five reels and three rows. It's a 15-payline video slot in the most basic sense of the word, and coins range from $0.01 to $1.00 apiece. Players can bet as many as five coins on each payline. The minimum bet size is $0.15 on each spin, but you can bet as high as $75 per spin if you prefer. This gives all players acceptable bet sizes, especially since there is a lot of precision afforded by the way the coin sizes and numbers of coins are broken down in the game controls. This game has a medium overall volatility with a balanced pay table.
Top Payouts
In the following, we're going to discuss basic payouts in this game based around a bet size of $1.20 per spin. Players who choose other bet sizes will have their available wins adjusted proportionately to their total wager.
The wild symbol is the top regular symbol, not counting the bonus feature symbols. Five of a kind gets you a $600 payout, which is sizable to say the least, and four will earn $160. You can also pick up a solid $16 payout for three of a kind, and two will earn you a $0.40 win if a better three of a kind combination isn't available. These are some pretty good payouts for the wild, especially considering it shows up fairly often on all reels.
The scatter is responsible for the other top wins in the game. Five scatters anywhere on the reels earns a $480 payout. You can pick up $60 for four or $4.80 for three. A simple $2.40 win is good for just two of them anywhere, and as you can imagine, this win will show up relatively often in Serenity because it only requires two matching symbols to appear anywhere on the reels.
Other Wins
Three lamps help to round out the rest of the wins. Five of the red lantern earns you a $40 payout with $8 available for four and $4 for three. All of these symbols pay for three of a kind or more only, but the scatter and wild pay for as few as two. The orange lamp has the same five of a kind payout of $40 and four of a kind win of $8, but the three of a kind pay drops to $1.60. The last lamp is the purple, oval one, and it pays $20 for five of a kind.
The A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols are in this game too. They look like they were straight-up copy and pasted out of a handful of other Asian-themed slots from Microgaming, and they have light Asian-inspired decorations on them. They don't really fit the theme all that well, in spite of the decoration, and we would have liked to see them be a bit less lazy about the symbols they chose because they stand out like a sore thumb in this game.
The red A pays $10 for five. You can pick up $8 wins for five of the orange K or yellow Q as well. The wins for the green J and blue 10 are $6 for five of a kind.
Free Spins Feature
Three or more of the scatter earns a set of 10 free spins. The number of free turns is the same no matter how many scatters you get on the screen. The wins are hit with a 3x multiplier in this feature, and that boosts the top payouts quite a bit.
Lantern Bonus
Three or more of the lantern bonus symbol on any activated payline gets a bonus feature based around choosing from a set of lamps. The more symbols you get to begin the feature, the higher the payouts of this pick-a-box style game.
Our Thoughts
In our opinion, Microgaming has done extremely well with the visual presentation of this game as far as the goal of presenting a zen-like experience for players. On the other hand, it feels like players are getting a bit of a cheap experience at the same time because of the lazy usage of the A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols, stylized in the exact same way as they've done other Asian-themed slots. This isn't a minor issue, and it really brings down the experience for the player. Overall, this is a beautiful slot with gameplay that's pretty average, and it will appeal to a fair number of players.
