Something that Play'n Go sometimes does with their games that we think is a lot of fun is play with the format and general underlying structure of the slot. With the Dragon Maiden video slot, this is an ongoing motif since you can make the game board bigger to give you a lot of extra ways to get paid, and this dynamic is an integral part of how the game functions.
This is because the Dragon Maiden slot by Play'n Go uses the all-ways format with 243 ways to win during the initial game. You can get expanding wilds that can cover two or three spaces on the reel it lands on. Players can also pick up a special free spins mode with reels that can expand to be up to six symbols high with tons of ways to get paid.
Betting Options
In an all-ways game, the betting isn't always intuitive since you often have to deal with coin amounts, coin multiples and other complicated options. Play'n Go gets around all of these issues by making it as simple as possible. You just choose a total bet amount that you'd like to make, ranging from $0.20 to $100 per spin, and then you're off to the races.
The base game has five reels with three rows. With the all-ways format, that means that there are 243 ways to win, from left to right only, to begin with. However, that can change as you progress through the game to the bonus features.
Dragon Scatters and Re-spins
The Dragon Scatter symbols are shown on all five reels. You need at least three to trigger the main feature, but you get extra chances to get there if you only pick up two with the Dragon Re-spins feature. The reels that hold the two dragons will lock into place, and the other three reels will continue spinning. If you get another dragon, the process remains until you get no new dragon symbols on the reels, and then your feature will be activated.
Dragon Free Spins Mode
Get at least three of the dragon scatters at once to activate the free spins feature. During this feature, when a dragon scatter lands on the reels, it increases the height of the reel by one up to a maximum of six. If you get to the maximum of six, a golden free spin is added to the end of your feature.
During the golden free spins, you will have all five reels stretch up to the maximum height of six rows each, and the reels will spin as usual. This gives you 7,776 ways to win on each of these turns, and you can get up to five golden spins at a time during the feature.
Expanding Wild Symbols
The dragon maiden herself is the wild symbol. She shows up on each reel and pays 12.5x for five of a kind. Payouts of 5x and 2.5x can be yours for four of a kind and three of a kind, respectively. She also expands to cover as many as three spots on the reel, and that can be even more during the bonus feature since the reels can expand to be as high as six symbols.
Payouts and Wins
There are four high-ranking symbols that have strong color motifs. The red pendant gets you 10x for five, and five of the purple ring symbol will pay out 7.5x. Players can also earn 5x for five of the blue dagger or 2.5x for five of the green dragon shield.
The low end of the pay table offers 1x for five of the purple spade or red heart. You can also earn 0.5x for five of the yellow diamond or green club symbols. Keep in mind that you'll earn multiples of these wins if you get matching symbols on the same reel vertically when you make the winning combination, so they're better than they appear as multiples of your total bet size.
Our Thoughts
Dragon Maiden is a great example of Play'n Go including the underlying format of a slot in its gameplay by allowing certain levels of manipulation of the all-ways layout. We like how this is incorporated into the features, and we love the amount of action that comes from it.
The look of this game is very strong as well. It's presented in a way that makes the lead character have a fair amount of depth considering the format, and it has strong music also.
