Your first look at the Shanghai Respins slot by Reelnrg will tell you that it's all about an Asian theme with very solid graphics. The visual appeal isn't all that this game has going for itself, however, as the gameplay is centered around a high hit-rate and lots of features. The volatility is still at a medium-low level in spite of the fact that there are so many bonus features, and that's because of the balanced nature of the pay table.
The format used by this game has five reels, three rows and 30 paylines. The betting is set up in the usual way, but instead of contending with coin sizes and different numbers of coins on each payline, all you have to really work with is how much you want to bet on each of those lines total. The available wager sizes run from $0.05 to $50 per line, which translates to $1.50 to $1,500 per spin. That maximum will vary depending on which casino you're at because they have the ability to customize the cap for the betting. The minimum wager, however, is set in stone. We would have preferred if they had a lower bet size available as well since $1.50 per turn is more than a lot of players are willing to play for.
Wild Woman Symbol
There is a woman who appears with a red tattoo across the side of her face, and she is the wild symbol in this slot. She appears on every reel to give you chances to win prizes that you would have missed otherwise. She gives you a solid win of 500x if you line up five of a kind on a given payline. Four of a kind earns you 150x, and you can also pick up 40x for three of a kind. The five-of-a-kind combination for this symbol is tied for the largest regular win in the game without using multipliers or other features.
This symbol also gives multipliers to winning combinations. You'll get a 2x multiplier on any winning combo that uses at least one of these wilds. Keep in mind, however, that it does not substitute for the scatter symbol.
Scattered Pandas and Free Spins
The symbol with a panda surrounded by a golden circle is the scatter. It also shows up on all five reels, and five of a kind will also give you a win of 500x. In fact, both of the other pays are also the same as the wild with 150x for four and 40x for three. These symbols pay no matter where they land on the reels, however. If you get three or more on the reels at once, after your scatter payout, you're given a random number of free spins as a bonus feature. This means more ways to win, but it also means quite a bit of value is tied up in the panda scatter symbol in the Shanghai Respin slot.
Respin Symbol and Feature
As the name of the game implies, there's a big respin feature that happens as well. It's atypical in the sense that we don't think we've seen this exact version of a respin feature before, but it's familiar enough that it won't seem like something completely new. When the Shanghai Respin symbol, shaped like a large, gold coin, shows up on a reel, your payouts are awarded as usual. However, the reel that symbol appears on will then respin to give you another chance to get some winnings. This is the main feature in the game, and it's surprisingly value-packed.
Other Important Payouts
Five of the Shanghai Respin symbol earns 300x, which jumps to 600x with the wild multiplier, and in turn, that is the largest individual win you can get on a single payline. You can also score 250x (or 500x with a wild multiplier) for five of the dragon symbol, and five of a kind of the golden fan is worth 200x. The red banners get you 150x when you line up five on a payline as well. There are also card rank symbols for A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9 that are decorated in one of the best ways we've seen card ranks used, and wins for five of a kind of these symbols range from 75x to 20x.
The graphics are a big part of what makes this game work, but the features and high-action gameplay are solid too. Shanghai Respin is a good game all-around, but it has two major weaknesses. The first is that the minimum bet size is $1.50 per spin, which is a bit on the high side and will exclude a lot of players from being able to get in on the action. The second is that some of the five-of-a-kind wins on the lower end are extremely low, like 30x for five of the J, 25x for five of the 10 and 20x for five of the 9. These will turn players off as well, and it's a shame because this game has a tremendous amount to offer otherwise.
