One of the problems with classic slots, as far as modern players are concerned, is that they don't really have the features or fast-paced gameplay that players really love. Rival Gaming knows how to shut down these objections with their three-reel games, and that's exactly what they've done with the Diamond Cherries game. While it maintains some of the main icons of the classic slot era, it does so while giving players the features they need for the gameplay to keep up with today's modern video slots in terms of pacing and volatility.
Classic Layout
The layout of this game is as classic as they get: three reels with just a single payline. However, that's a bit misleading because of the way the scatter symbols work in this game, but we'll cover that below. Players get to choose coin sizes that start at just $0.01 per spin, and since you'll need to bet three coins on every single spin you make, you only have to spend $0.03 per pull. This is exceptionally low, so this game is clearly accessible by low stakes players. On top of that, you can get in with bets as high as $30 per spin since the maximum coin size is $10.
Jackpot Sizing
At this point in this review, we have to point out that Diamond Cherries has a disproportionate jackpot system, much like most classic slots to ever be invented. The basic idea is that you can bet one, two or three coins on each spin, but it's in your best interest to always play with three. All of the payouts but the jackpot are scaled appropriately. For example, if you would get a 15x payout with one coin, you'd get 30x with two and 45x with three.
However, with the highest-paying symbol, one coin will get you 750x, and two earns 1,500x. If things were proportional, three would earn 2,250x. However, there's a bonus that kicks this up to 2,500x, a full 250x extra added on, as long as you use three coins. It also doesn't matter what coin size you use with this, so even if you're playing for $0.01 coins, make sure that you use the maximum bet of three coins.
Diamond Wins
The diamonds from the title are probably the most important symbol in the game in terms of the symbol you'll get payouts from the most. This is a scatter, so it can show up anywhere on the reels to give you wins. Just one is required for a payout of 3x (assuming you're playing with three coins), and two anywhere will get you 9x. Three on the reels, even if they don't all land squarely on the payline, will earn you a solid 300x win, which is the second-largest payout available in this slot.
Bar and Seven Wins
Like most classic slots, this game uses three bar symbols. The blue bar symbol with just one bar will give you a 45x win for three, and the double bar in purple pays out double that for a 90x win. A 120x prize is available for three of the red triple bar, however. On top of that, there are mixed bar wins of 12x. If you line up any three bars, no matter what order they're in or which bar symbols they are, then you'll get a 12x win if at least one of them doesn't match the others.
In addition to this, there's a lucky seven that pays out 150x for three of a kind.
Top-Paying Symbols and Wild Multipliers
The Diamonds and Cherries logo symbol is both a wild and a multiplier symbol in this game. Three of a kind triggers the 2,500x top jackpot. However, if you use one of these symbols to create a winning combination, then that payout is hit with a 2x multiplier. What's more is that using two to hit a winning combination will give you a 4x multiplier. Note that the wild symbol substitutes for every thing except for the scattered diamond.
Overview
This is a game that's very feature-driven in the sense that the scatters and wild multipliers drive most of the action. That's what sets this game apart from other three-reel classic slots and makes it actually play more like older video slots that didn't always need free spin features or other types of second-screen bonus rounds. Overall, if you're a fan of action and you like the genre, then this is a game that you'll get a lot of mileage out of, even though it doesn't fit the stereotype of what a three-reel game usually plays like.
