Jewels and gems are a popular theme in online slots, and Rival Gaming's Star Jewels game is their contribution to the genre. This game has a combination space and gems theme, and while the bright neon graphics and lively sound effects create a very engrossing experience, the gameplay itself does not disappoint either. Format and Layout
In this game, Rival Gaming has opted for a 10-payline format with payouts that are based on left-to-right combinations. There are five reels with three rows, much like virtually all other video slots these days, and players have a few different options when it comes to honing in on the specific bet size they want to use.
One option is to play with fewer than 10 paylines, though we don't recommend it. Instead, you should use the variety of coin sizes ranging from $0.01 to $1 apiece and the fact that you can bet up to five coins per payline. Once you set your bet size, you can play normally or use the auto-spin feature for a hands-off experience.
The Wild Features
On the first and third reels, you'll sometimes see a golden wild symbol. This symbol will expand to cover the entire reel if doing so will give you extra payouts, so you're never missing out on anything if it doesn't expand. We would have liked to see it expand as a matter of visual appeal, but it's a small complaint.
Another matter of importance with the wild symbol is that using the expanding wild in a winning combination will give you a free re-spin with the wilds held in place. Obviously this adds quite a bit of value to the game, and it makes it possible to line up multiple wins on the same spin to give you big overall payouts.
Top-End Symbol Set
There are four symbols that make up the highest tier in this game. The diamond symbol pays 1,000x for five of a kind, and that's the largest individual payout in the game. What's important to note is that this is also the only symbol in the Star Jewels online slot that pays for just two of a kind. A pearl pays 400x for five of a kind, as does the heart gem, and five of the blue gem gives you 300x. These are some solid balanced payouts, especially considering that four of a kind will give you 300x for diamonds, 100x in pearls or hearts, and 80x in the blue stone. These are very balanced top-end payouts.
Medium-Level Wins
Four symbols make up the middle tier of payouts in Star Jewels. The purple gem pays 250x, the green emerald gives 200x, the blue teardrop pays 150x, and the red ruby gives you a solid 120x win. What's important to note is that there's not a huge drop from the highest wins to the medium-level payouts, and that's something that contributes to the very reasonable volatility that this game has in the first place.
Low-End Payouts
Six symbols make up the lowest tier of wins, and they are the A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9 symbols. Rival has done a good job with making sure that these symbols are stylized instead of just being thrown together, so they really fit in well with the overall theme of the game. Aces pay 100x for five of a kind, and that's still a respectable win. Kings and queens both pay 75x for five. Jacks, tens and nines all give you a 60x payout for five of a kind, and this reflects the balanced pay table that we referenced earlier.
Overview
Historically speaking, Rival Gaming isn't known for having outstanding graphics like games from some competitors like Net Entertainment.
