It's no secret that there are certain themes that get used quite a bit in the online slot world. While there's nothing wrong with that, it does put developers in a bit of a pickle if they want to develop games that have similar themes to those that have been used so often. The key to avoiding getting lumped in with the rest is to make the game stand out by tweaking it and making it their own, and that's exactly what SkillOnNet was able to do with Planet Zodiac. This video slot uses a space theme, but it has a heavy astrology slant to it, which makes sense because astrological signs are based primarily on star and planet configurations.
To start things off, this game has five reels and three rows, making it a video slot. Across those reels are ten different paylines, and you can win both left-to-right and right-to-left on these lines. This increases the hit-rate of the game quite a bit, and you'll find that the high hit-rate is a major part of the gameplay for this title, giving it a lower volatility than average. Players can pick coin sizes that begin at $0.01 and go up to $1.00 each, and you can wager up to five coins on each payline. The minimum bet size is $0.10 per spin since you can't play with fewer than 10 paylines on each spin, and betting goes all the way up to $50 per turn. All players at all stakes will have bet sizes that make sense with this game.
The main symbol that drives most of the gameplay in Planet Zodiac is the wild. The planet symbol is the wild symbol, and it shows up on the second, third and fourth reels. Because it doesn't appear on all of the reels, you won't get special payouts for the wilds only, but you still get a lot of value because of two different features that are tied into the wild symbols. These features increase the volatility of the game slightly, but they pack a lot of value by increasing the hit-rate at the same time.
The first wild feature is that the wilds simply expand whenever they show up on the reels. That means that any wild expands vertically to cover the entire reel every single time it shows up. That offers a good amount of value in the form of more wins that you would have gotten anyway, in particular multi-line wins, but that's not all.
If you get a wild symbol on the reels, you also get a different feature in the form of a free re-spin. Whenever this happens, the wild reel becomes sticky for a re-spin, and the rest of the reels will spin normally at the same level of stakes as you were playing in the triggering spin. If you get another wild on the reels, then the process repeats with all of the wilds you have gotten so far staying on the reels. What's awesome is that you can get this up to three times, once for each of the wild reels that you can earn. Once you have those three on the reels, you only need two symbols to get a five of a kind win.
There are seven regular paying symbols in the game. They are color-coded zodiac symbols. Since most people don' know the zodiac symbols, we'll refer to them as the colors they are. The red symbol pays 1,000x for five of a kind, which is the top jackpot in the game. The dark purple symbol pays 500x for five, and the red/pink one pays 250x. You can get 200x for five of the light purple symbol along with 100x for five of the yellow. Five of the green pays 75x, and five of the teal symbol pays 50x, which aren't bad wins at all for the lowest paying symbols in the game.
With only seven regular symbols on top of the wilds, your hit-rate will be pretty impressive. Some similar video slots might have 12+ symbols, and sometimes there are as many as 15 or 16. Comparatively, this layout with fewer symbols is favorable for a low-volatility experience.
Planet Zodiac is a good example of SkillOnNet putting together a game based on a somewhat atypical theme. In reality, they've taken the space theme and totally made it their own by going with the zodiac motif. The wild planet features are pretty good as well, and they've done an excellent job with putting together a simple, low-volatility game experience that proves that you don't need tons of flash and over the top features to create a solid game that players will enjoy.
