There's no denying that some themes in the online slots industry get used a lot more than others. The deep sea sub-genre has more games than its fair share, and the GoldSea slot by AGames is another title in that selection. The idea is that you're diving for treasure in a sunken ship, and there are a number of features and aspects of the presentation that bring this to life.

On a graphical standpoint, this game isn't bad at all, but it's not quite at an elite level. It shines more on the gameplay end of things with multiple features woven together in a way that gives players an exciting style of play. Along these lines, you end up with a medium overall volatility while maintaining a high hit-rate.

Format and Layout

This 21-payline video slot has a format that's slightly different than the norm because of the uneven number of lines. The fact that it has five vertical reels with three rows is normal enough, but your bet sizes end up being uneven amounts for the most part because of the number of paylines, which cannot be changed.

For example, you can bet $0.01 coins on each of those lines, and that will bring your minimum bet size to the $0.21 level. Coins can be set to be worth as much as $1, and you can bet up to 10 coins on each line as well. Combine these to the max, and you get $210 as the largest bet size available. While it's clear that this covers players at all levels of play and bankrolls, the bottom line is that it is a strange number in the grand scheme of things, but it doesn't really affect the gameplay that much once you get going.

Octopus and Sunken Ship Bonus

The octopus symbol in black is a key bonus symbol in this game. Three of a kind gives a 9x win, four of a kind pays out 12x, and five of a kind awards you a strong 15x payout, all of which are multiplied by your entire bet size. When you get at least three of these scatters on the game board at the same time, you'll be transported to a second screen for a bonus feature where you go up against the octopus itself while trying to swipe some treasure from the sunken ship.

The ship has five holes in the side, and you're going to have to pick which one to look into. You'll either get an instant win in the form of treasure worth up to 5x your total bet, or you'll get an octopus tentacle. Getting the tentacle ends the round, but you can end up getting treasure from several of the spots if you can dodge the octopus for long enough.

Wild Anchor Symbols

The wild symbol in this game is the anchor in gold. It does not get its own payouts, and it doesn't count for the octopus scattered bonus symbol. However, it will help you to get winning combinations outside of that.

Diver Stacked Bonus Symbol

The diver appears as a stacked bonus symbol, which is something that you don't see all that often. Get divers on at least three reels to activate a set of free spins. You'll always be given 15 free turns for this feature, but your multiplier depends on more than that. It starts at the 2x level, and it increases based on which depth you get to. Your depth is determined by collecting chest symbols on the reels, which in turn also give you three extra free spins each. It's a pretty cool way to handle a bonus feature since you can actually just keep improving the multiplier up to a maximum of 7x.

Important Prizes and Wins

The four highest-paying symbols are sea creatures, and it starts with a 1,200x jackpot for five of a kind combinations of the starfish symbol. You can also earn 400x for five of the crab, and 200x for the puffer fish is also available. Getting a 100x win for five of the shell symbol is solid as well. From there, you just get wins ranging from 50x to 10x for the blue A, K, Q and J symbols. They have been done in a way that looks nice and fits the theme, and they do not come across as looking generic at all.

In Summary

GoldSea is a game that's from a sub-genre with a lot of competition. AGames did a fine job with this title, but because there are so many games with the same kind of theme, it's hard to say that it stands out. Regardless, the gameplay and graphics come together to give players an experience that's more than sufficient, and if it had a different theme with graphics on a similar level, it would probably come across as a much stronger slot.
