Whenever you see dragons in an online slot, for whatever reason, they are typically made as friendly as possible in a very cartoonish and non-threatening way. We have to admit that we've never really liked this type of approach, and Double Dragons is thankfully a massive departure to that particular way of going with the dragon theme. This game has a very serious, grave feel to it, and you can get yourself in the middle of the action in war between two opposing dragon forces.
Layout of the Game
The layout of this slot is based on 25 paylines spread across a set of five reels with three rows of symbols. You can get coins that run from $0.01 to $5, but you can't change the number of coins per payline. This gives players a total overall betting range that runs from $0.25 to $125 per turn, and we see no reason why this won't cover every budget for online slots out there in a way that works for any player.
Symbol Set
The set of symbols in this game is pretty impressive, but it's also pretty easy to learn. There are four major symbols, four minor symbols and two wild symbols. The major symbols are made up of four dragon eyes, and they're all in different colors to make it easy to tell them apart. The purple dragon's eye gives you 125x for five of a kind, and you can get 100x for five of the orange one too. A 90x prize is available for players who pick up five of the blue dragon eye, and the green dragon eye is worth 80x for five on an activated payline. These symbols look pretty cool on the reels, especially when there are several of them bunched together, and we think it was a great, aesthetically pleasing option.
For the low-paying symbols, the four suits from playing cards are used. However, they are colored to make the same rankings as the four dragon eyes. The purple spade, for example, pays players 50x. You can also earn 50x for five of the heart, which is red in this game. Five of the blue diamond symbol on an activated payline will earn players a 40x win, and you'll also pick up 40x if you get five of the green club.
Two Wild Symbols
There are a red dragon and blue dragon fighting in this game. Both of their heads are wild symbols, but you also get features for when they show up. The red dragon gives you two or three extra wilds on the reels, and the blue wilds give you a 2x multiplier in the cascade re-spins that we are going to look at below.
These symbols are also the keys to the free spins features. You collect these wilds as you play, and when you get nine of one or the other total, you get a set of five free spins. You get different features for each set based on fire and ice motifs for the red and blue dragons, respectively.
Cascading Re-spin Feature
After every single winning combination that you get in Double Dragons, the symbols that make up the winning combos will disappear, and new symbols will fall down vertically to fill up the spots until you have a new 5x3 grid of symbols. This is a free re-spin, and you can win again and again like this. If you get four consecutive wins in a row off of the same spin, such as with a real money win and three re-spin wins, then you get a special feature with two wilds reels (the second and fourth reels always) where you get four free spins. This is obviously a value-packed feature since you only need to get three matching symbols for the larger five of a kind pays.
We really like how they've woven the dragons into a lot of different features in this game, and it shows that Yggrasil cares a lot about making sure the players enjoy the gameplay aspect of the title instead of just looking at the theme itself and the visuals.
In Summary
Double Dragons is a pretty strong game overall in both the graphics and gameplay department. It has a high hit-rate, especially with the cascading re-spin feature, and the wild-based features drive the action quite a bit as well. There's a ton of action pushed into this game, and it's definitely not the best choice for players who just want to sit back and relax with something that won't jolt them very much. You'll definitely get a rush from all of the features and massive dragons in this title, and that's exactly what they seemed to have been shooting for.
