It takes a lot to make a game based on an Egyptian mythology theme and have it stand out. Yggdrasil was up for the challenge with their Valley of the Gods slot, and they knocked it out of the park. This game is based around giving players a tremendous amount of action as you collect certain scarabs and try to remove others from the reels to give you better chances to win.
Layout and Format
The overall format of this game uses five reels and five rows. However, there are 12 golden scarab blocker symbols that start near the corners of this game, and you can remove them for more ways to win as we explain down below. Whenever your gameplay starts, you'll have one symbol on the first and last reels, three symbols on the second and fourth reels, and five symbols on the middle reel. This means you start with 45 ways to win, but you can remove all of the golden scarabs to have a massive 3,125 ways to win.
Betting in this game is based on wagering 25 coins per spin, but the number of ways you have to win at any given point in the game is listed in the bottom-left corner for your convenience. Coin values start at $0.004, which puts the minimum bet size at a very affordable $0.10 per turn. Along these lines, you can bet up to $100 per spin with $4 coin sizes. The volatility of this game is fairly low because the pay table is balanced and the hit-rate is high, but you still may want to play with a smaller bet size than you usually do until you get used to the gameplay anyway.
Most of the gameplay centers around the respin feature. The way this works is that when you get a winning combination, golden scarab blockers will come flying off of the reels, opening up more ways to win. The number of blockers removed will be the same as the number of symbols in your initial winning combinations. Once those scarabs are removed, the reels will spin again with more ways to win for a free respin.
If you win again, the same process happens over and over again until you have a respin that doesn't give you a winning payout. You can get all 12 of the golden scarabs off of the reels to have a full 5x5 layout with the "all ways" format, and that will give you an enormous 3,125 ways to win on those spins.
Scarab Collections Feature
You can activate the Scarab Collections feature at random, and it's tied to the statue on the left-hand side of the board. When you do this, you'll start with a 2x multiplier, and you'll add one multiplier for each blue scarab that you collect. Your multiplier will be applied to all of the rest of the respins for that particular turn.
Extra Lives Feature
You can also trigger the Extra Lives feature at random as well. When you get this, you'll start with one extra life and add another for every five red scarabs you collect. What an extra life does is gives you an additional respin during that turn even if you hit a losing round, and that makes it much easier to string along enormous winning streaks within the same set of respins on a paid turn.
Payouts and Symbols
There are five symbols of the Egyptian gods based on four different colors. We won't name the gods here since that doesn't really tell you which symbol is which unless you're already very familiar with Egyptian mythology. Five of a kind of the red or blue symbols with gods on them will earn 500x for five of a kind. These are the largest regular pays in this slot. You can pick up 250x for five-of-a-kind wins of the purple or green god symbols as well.
You'll also find six different symbols in a sand-like coloring with different-colored gems in them. The bird with the red gem and the eye with the blue gem get you 40x for five of a kind. The snake with the orange gem and the cat with the green pay 30x for five. At the bottom of the pay table, you can earn 25x for five of the cross with the purple gem or the twisted curves with the blue.
Valley of the Gods has a style of gameplay that we haven't ever seen before in an online slot. Yggdrasil has done an excellent job with making this game stand out from others that use similar themes. Players who like a lot of action will get a tremendous experience from this game, even if you don't care that much about Egyptian mythology. Overall, it's a very solid title with a lot to offer.
