The pepper-themed ChilliPop video slot is a title developed by BetSoft that takes a bit of an "outside of the box" approach to how these games should be played. It offers excellent, 3-D graphics, which isn't surprising considering the history that this developer has with regards to top-tier graphics in the industry, and it matches how good it looks with how strong and exciting the gameplay is.

From a volatility standpoint, it's maybe just a hair lower than the medium range. However, the hit-rate is higher than you'd expect, and there are various features that help you to get more value by adding ways to win and giving you bigger wins for existing prizes, so that keeps the game from having swings that are out of control as well.

Game Format and Betting

The format of this title can change during the feature, but during the main game, you'll have five columns and three rows. We say columns instead of reels because there are no traditional reels or paylines in this title. Instead, you get winning combinations by connecting matching symbols into clusters of three or more. These clusters have to be matching symbols that are adjacent to each other either horizontally or vertically, but they do not all have to be in a straight line.

A title with this type of format will obviously not have a traditional payline-based betting structure. Instead, you'll be spending 50 coins on each turn, and you get to adjust your wager overall by changing which size of coin you use. The minimum option is $0.01 for a $0.50 bet size, and you can bet with coins that go up to the $1 level for $50 bet sizes at the maximum.

Wild Pinatas and Multipliers

The pinata symbol is wild in this slot, and it can help you to get wins that you would have missed out on otherwise. What's of particular note is that it can substitute for multiple symbols to help you to create multiple clusters.

However, it also gives you a multiplier on the win for each individual cluster. The multiplier is one added to the total number of wilds in the cluster. For example, if you had a cluster of five symbols, and two of them were wilds, then there would be a 3x multiplier on the value of that cluster.

You can earn special wins for when the entire game board is full of pinatas as well. It's worth as much as 1,000x (as a multiple of your whole bet) for 64 of a kind, as you'll see in the free spins mode below, but it's 50x for filling the 5x3 grid in the regular game mode.

Popping Pepper Cluster Wins

Aside from the scattered mule symbols, all winning symbols explode after their payouts have been credited to your balance. Afterwards, additional symbols will fall from the top of the game to fill in the spaces left behind and to give you extra chances to win. This increases the average number of payouts that you get per line compared to what you might expect.

The Mule Trail Free Spins Mode

Three or more mules trigger a free spins mode, and you can earn up to 26 free spins with 15 mules on the screen at once. This is why the mules do not explode during the cluster feature: They accumulate to award you the more free spins possible at the end of your turn.

You'll be given a minimum of five free spins in this mode, and during the mode, you'll be able to collect mules on the reels instead of having them re-trigger the feature. The more mules you get, the bigger the game area becomes to give you more ways to win. You can get it up to an eight-by-eight format with 64 symbols, and it's pretty obvious that this would mean some serious value since you only need three matching symbols in a cluster for a win.

Regular Payouts

All of the regular cluster payouts are based on a payrate multiplied by the number of symbols in the cluster. The lady pink pepper and yellow crazy ones give 12x, and the rest pay from 7x down to the 2x level. There are eight peppers that pay out in total.

Our Thoughts

There are two main elements of the ChilliPop slot that come together to form the basis of the experience. Aside from BetSoft's mastery of 3-D graphics that look great instead of gaudy and overproduced, you get the expanding format aspect of the game combined with the cluster-based approach to wins. This leads to a fairly unique style of gameplay, and it's easy to see that we're fans of what they've put together here.
