BetSoft is a software developer that has a habit of breaking the mold once in a while just to show that they can, and that's the case with Sugar Pop 2: Double Dipped. When you first look at this game, you can tell that it stands out and isn't your typical video slot. With that having been said, they haven't made it different just for the sake of being different. It's the sequel to the original Sugar Pop game, which was pretty popular, and they've made sure to make this title exceptional as a result.

Game Layout

There's a big, square grid of symbols where you'll play this game, and it has seven rows with seven columns. As such, you will not have the usual style of paylines that run from left to right across the game board. Instead, you make winning combinations with what this game calls clusters, and we'll expand on that down below.

Betting is a little different than what you might be used to in this game, but it's easy to understand once you see how it works. The base wager is 50 coins, and the coins go from $0.01 to $1 apiece. However, you can multiply your coins bet by up to five for a maximum wager of 250 coins per spin. This means you can actually bet at several levels between $0.50 and $250 per turn, so you're in good shape no matter what level of stakes you prefer to enjoy.

Cluster Wins and Exploding Wins

All of the wins in this game are based on clusters instead of paylines. Clusters are groups of symbols that are beside of each other either vertically or horizontally (or both), and you need at least four to win with winning combinations. This gives this game a bit of a different style of gameplay, but with 49 symbols on the reels at all times, there are a lot of ways to win with this approach.

This game also has an exploding wins feature. The way this feature works is that you get paid normally whenever you get wins, but then those winning symbols explode to leave empty spaces. These spaces are filled by new symbols falling down into place, and this gives you another opportunity to get paid. If you win here, then the explosion process happens again, and it repeats over and over until there are no new wins to be had.

Earning Free Spins

The free spins symbol is a red circle candy, and it has "FS" on it in yellow. When you get four or more in a cluster, you're given a set of free spins. The number of free spins is determined by how many symbols are in the cluster. Four of the FS symbol is worth five free spins. For every extra FS symbol you get, an additional two free turns are added to the total. This means that five of the FS is worth seven free spins and six of them are worth nine free spins, etc.

Level Up for Extra Symbols and Features

The only symbol in this game that doesn't follow the cluster approach is the level up symbol. It shows an arrow pointing up, so it's easy to tell which one it is. Whenever you get it in any size cluster (even just one by itself), it adds to the level up meter on the side of the reels. Once you fill that meter, you'll move up to the next level.

Once you break certain level, new random candies are added to the reels. For example, the caramel chew at level five will remove extra symbols from the board to give you more opportunities to avalanche wins. At level 25, you get the morphing golden wild that attaches itself to adjacent symbols to give you extra cluster payouts. There are eight total special candies that you can get by leveling up to level 29.

Calculating Wins and Payouts

There are seven regular-paying symbols in this game. The number of symbols in a cluster is multiplied by that symbol's base value to determine the total value for the win. At the bottom level, the pink teardrop is worth 4x, and it's 6x for the pink hexagon. You can win 8x for the orange symbol, 10x for the yellow symbol or 12x for the round, green symbol. The top two symbols in the game pay 15x and 20x, and that's for the blue triangle and the red heart, respectively.

In Summary

The action found in the Sugar Pop 2: Double Dipped online slot shows that BetSoft was very serious about making this game a lot of fun to play for longer periods of time. The replay value is tremendous here, and it's rewarded by new features with the level up system as well.
