With a sort of medieval theme, Ivanhoe is a game that is all about going to battle on the reels and taking your shot at becoming a king. You'll play out this scenario on the reels as you play within a classic slot environment, but there's a lot more action than what you normally see out of games with this type of format. This game stands out as being one of the more action-packed titles of its sub-genre that we can remember ever coming across.
Format and Layout
This classic slot uses three reels and three rows of symbols. While the most paylines you normally see from a game with this layout is five or eight, this one actually has 17 ways to win on every single spin. Luckily, you'll choose wagers based on your total bet size, so you don't have to worry about betting a number of coins on each of the paylines, which would create some very uneven overall bet sizes.
You get 12 different available bet sizes per spin with this game. there are 11 sizes that range from $0.20 to $60 per spin, but then there is a super high roller option of $100 per turn that is worth being mindful of. You can pick your bet size manually, or you can go with one of four preset betting strategy options. The Optimizer strategy always bets a specific percentage of your bankroll, rounded down. The Leveller increases your bet size whenever you hit five losses in a row, but it resets down to the original amount when you hit a winning combination. The Booster and Jumper bounce around based on wins or losses.
Ivanhoe Bonus Feature
There's a main bonus feature in this game that is actually what you're shooting for most of the time outside of the jackpot wins. If you get three of the Ivanhoe bonus symbol, you get a bonus feature with five free spins. However, this feature is broken up into a number of stages. The further you get, the more wins you can nail and the bigger multipliers you get.
The first stage is the Ambush, and you get five free spins to start with and a 2x multiplier. Get 2,500 in winnings to move up to the next level. Stage two adds three free spins with a 3x multiplier, and you need 8,000 to move up to the next level. Stage three gives three more free spins with a 4x multiplier and a 20,000 prize goal to move up. You can get to stage four or stage five with multipliers of 5x and 6x as well, and you still get three free spins each time you move up.
During these free spins, you'll also have the crown symbol show up on the reels. It is a wild, which makes it even easier to hit winning combinations, especially since there are only three reels.
Winning Combinations
The red lucky seven is the best-paying symbol of the game. Three of a kind pays out a solid 3,000x win. You can also pick up a 1,000x payout for three of the blue lucky seven. The BAR symbol makes an appearance in this game as well, and it's the last of the three highest-paying symbols. You can get a win of 500x for three of this symbol on a payline.
On the bottom end of the pay table are three fruit symbols, and this is where the real throwback to the three-reel fruit machines comes into play. Three of the watermelon symbol pays a solid 160x win, and you can get 120x for three of the lemon. Three of the cherry pays players 80x, which is a pretty reasonable win considering it's the lowest payout in the entire game.
A Note on the Format
It's really important to realize that this game does not play like a usual three-reel game. The added paylines and the way the bonus feature works creates a sort of hybrid gameplay style between classic slots and their video slot cousins. It's something you'll have to get used to when you play this game, but it adds a lot to the experience.
Overview
We think that Ivanhoe is a great example of Thunderkick doing something a bit outside of the box. It's a solid game with a really in-depth feature that includes several stages that play through a rescue story. If you're able to get deep into that feature, you'll get wild symbols, big multipliers and lots of free turns, making it a tremendous opportunity to run up massive payouts. The chances for big wins are definitely there, and it's hard to find anything wrong with the bonus feature along these lines.
Overall, this is a rock-solid game that does about as much as anyone could ever expect with a 3x3-format game. If other software providers made three-reel slots that were this exciting, then it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect the format to make a big comeback.
