The 1970s and 1980s were dominated by arcade games. At the time, they had better graphics and sound than any available home consoles, and Space Invaders was one of the most popular titles ever. The Space Arcade slot by Nolimit City is a throwback to this game with a particular style of pixelated graphics that combines the classic with the modern. The gameplay is pretty solid as well with features that mesh well together and that provide players with a relaxed experience, much like playing older arcade-style games.
The Classic Format
This slot is based on a classic arcade game, so it makes sense that it's a classic slot. It uses three reels and three rows, but it has nine paylines that span left-to-right across the reels. You won't normally see this many paylines in a classic-style game like this, but as you'll see with how the features work, it's a major part of the overall gameplay.
You'll keep all nine paylines activated at all times when you play this game, and coins go from $0.01 to $10 each. This means that the minimum bet is $0.09, which is the perfect size for penny players, and the maximum is $90. There are plenty of bet sizes in between, so no matter what stakes you prefer, you'll find something that suits what you're looking for.
During regular play, there's an Escalating Multipliers feature that drives most of your experience. The way it works is that a winning spin drives up the multiplier for the following spin. You can get a chain of consecutive wins to drive the multiplier up higher and higher. It increases by one each time, and it caps out at a maximum of 6x. Whenever you hit a spin that isn't a win, the multiplier resets back at 1x.
The effect of this feature is that your winning streaks become more important and much more valuable. If you get just three wins in a row, then your next spin is hit with a 3x multiplier, for example. Since this game has nine paylines instead of the more typical one, three or five for three-reel slots, it becomes much easier to start and maintain a winning streak, which means bigger multipliers.
Winged Wild Respins
Players can occasionally get a wild symbol that has wings on the reels. When this happens, you will get whatever payouts you are owed, and then the Winged Wild Respins feature kicks in. The reel with the wild will shift one spot upward, and the other two reels will respin to give you extra pays. This continues until the wild symbol is completely off of the reels.
It's important to note that the multipliers will not reset during this feature, so you don't have to worry about the respin feature messing up a winning streak. However, it can increase the multiplier with any wins that you get during it, and this is a great way for the two features to interact with each other and boost each other's value.
Aside from the wild symbol, there are really only seven symbols in this game, and they are all regular-paying symbols. If you're familiar with the Space Invaders arcade game that this slot is based on, some of the symbols might look somewhat familiar since they are based on the same concepts. However, the pattern to look for here is that the "hotter" the color, the better the payouts.
Three of the yellow figure gets you a pay of 99x. There's a light green alien that pays 27x, and that's the same payout for the regular green symbol. A payout of 15x is available for five of the blue ship symbol, and it drops to 4.5x for five of the purple cross symbol. The purple square gets you 4.5x as well, and the lowest payout is 3x for three of the small ship. All of these symbols are done in exaggerated, pixelated graphics to match up with the style used in older arcade games, but they still look modern with their color and shading treatment, so they fit in well with this game.
Space Arcade is a slot that Nolimit City has used to bring the older Space Invader games to the reels without having to use licensed names or graphics. It's very clear what they were going for here, and it has been done particularly well. The gameplay is surprisingly strong for a three-reel slot, and while the graphics aren't of some overblown, 3D variety, they look great and fit the theme perfectly.
The only issue that we think some players might have with this game is that the volatility is extremely low, and the hit-rate is particularly high, so you won't be winning any major jackpots. Even with the multipliers, the highest payout you can get on a single win is just under 600x, so if you prefer a style of play that's about hunting big jackpots, then you might want to try something else instead.
