Innovation is difficult to come by sometimes in the online slot world. It can seem like everything that can be done has been done so far because you often see the same types of concepts and features in games over and over again. Playson likes to break the mold, and they did that to a certain degree with their Clover Tales slot. This game uses a magical theme with rainbows and pots of gold, but they've tied the features into it in a way that sets it apart from games based on a similar concept.
Game Format
In this game, you'll have five reels, three rows and nine paylines. That is an older style, but in this case, it was used not because the game is dated but because it fits with how the bonus features work, as you'll see below. You can choose total bet sizes that start off at the $0.27 level and that run up to $90. This corresponds to bets per line ranging from $0.03 to $10 apiece. This is a pretty good betting range for players, and it's hard to see anyone feeling left out from such a wide range of options.
It's very important to note that all of the payouts in this game are based on multiples of your total bet size. For all of the payouts we will describe below, everything is based on a bet size of $0.90. If you increase or decrease your bet size from that, the wins will increase or decrease proportionately.
The Rainbow Line System
In games with this type of theme, there's a common idea of there being a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. What you'll find in this slot is that there is a rainbow on the reels at all times, but it jumps around on the different paylines. Before each spin, one payline will be chosen as the Rainbow Line at random, and it's the source of a lot of bonus features depending on which symbols or combinations fall on it. This is an innovative way of handling the bonus rounds and other goodies in this slot, and we can't remember having ever seen something work out like this before.
Expanding Wild Symbols
During the main game, the wild symbols appear on the second, third and fourth reels. In the free spins feature that we'll describe below, they show up on all five. During this feature, five of a kind wins 25x, four gets you 10x and three wins 2x. Keep in mind that these are all multiplied by the total bet size.
What makes this wild even more valuable is that it can turn into an expanding wild and cover the whole reel. Whether or not it does this is determined by if it falls on the Rainbow Line. When it does, it will expand. If not, it acts as a normal wild.
Free Spins Bonus Features
The fairy and leprechaun symbols are the two highest symbols in the game other than the wild. When you hit a winning combination that includes either of these symbols on the Rainbow Line, then you're given one of two different free spins bonus rounds. In the first, you'll get five free spins with between one and five expanded wilds randomly added to the reels. In the other, you get five free spins with an expanding wild that starts on the fifth reel and that moves one spot to the left on each subsequent spin.
Respin Features
A win with the pipes, horseshoe or clover symbols on the Rainbow Line activates one of two respin features. You can get a respin with frozen wild symbols where the symbols that activated the feature turn into wilds for the respin. You can also get the same type of feature but with shifting wilds that move around some before the respin begins.
Top Payouts
Five of the fairy symbol or the leprechaun will get you a 15x win each. This drops down to a payout worth 5x for five of a kind of the pipes, horseshoe or clover symbols. You can also win 3x for five of the orange A or red K symbol, and it drops down to 2x for five of the green Q or blue J.
Our Thoughts
Playson has done a tremendous job with the Clover Tales slot of making the bonus features play into the theme of the game in a way that makes complete sense. This is one of the keys to making an immersive slot with a lot of replay value. This game also has great graphics and is very pleasing to the eyes, and the overall aesthetic works out really well. They have packed a lot of features into a relatively small package here, and it works out in a way that provides for a solid gameplay experience that's full of action.
