William Shakespeare's most well known play of all time is Romeo and Juliet, and that is the theme of this title by Pragmatic Play. This game features several of the main characters from this legendary story, and they come together with features that make sense based on the pull that both Romeo and Juliet had for each other. While the graphics of this game aren't going to win awards on their own, the gameplay and feature set aren't bad at all.
Slot Format
The format of this game has five reels and three rows. This is a typical video slot format, and there are 25 paylines available on each spin. Coins start at $0.01, so the minimum bet per spin is a super low $0.25. However, you can also bet up to 10 coins per payline, and your bet sizing is further adjustable with coin sizes up to $0.50 apiece. The maximum bet size is $125, so even high stakes players can get in on the action with this classic story.
Story Motifs
In most online slots, it doesn't really matter if you know the motifs that drive the story. In this game, however, you're going to feel like you're playing an extremely generic game if you don't know them, so here's the basic rundown. Romeo and Juliet come from families that are in a blood feud with each other. The nurse and priest conspire to allow these two lovers to get out of a pickle that is instigated by Juliet's father forcing her to marry someone else. They plan to fake her death with a potion that puts her into a deep sleep, but Romeo thinks she's actually dead and poisons himself. She wakes up before he dies from the poison, and then she kills herself with a dagger.
Main Symbols
With that brief explanation, the four top-paying symbols in the game make a lot more sense. The nurse pays 1,000x, and that makes sense given that she's the ringleader of the situation. The priest is also a top symbol, and he pays 750x for five of a kind. Five of the poison that Romeo drinks pays out 300x, and you can get a 200x win for five of the dagger that Juliet uses to finish herself off. Finally, there is a white rose that pays 100x that's a symbol of love and whatnot. Each of these symbols really fits inside of the set of motifs for the story, but they seem pretty generic if you don't know about all of that.
Low-End Symbol Set
The lower end of the symbols are dictated by the A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols. In our slot reviews, we are known for really ripping on software developers who are lazy in their usage of these symbols, and Pragmatic Play definitely gets points off of their score for this game because of the incredibly generic approach to using these symbols. They are stylized in what may be the most plain, uninspiring and lazy way possible.
The red A and yellow K both have the same payouts with 60x for five of a kind. Likewise, the green Q, blue J and purple 10 all have the same payout for five of a kind, and that comes in at 50x. What's worth pointing out here is that these five-of-a-kind pays are pretty high for low symbols in a game like this.
Wild Symbols and the Free Spin Feature
Romeo and Juliet are both wild. Romeo appears on the first reel, and he slides one spot to the right for free re-spins when he shows up. Juliet starts on the fifth reel, and she does the same thing moving to the left. If they meet up on the middle reel, then the entire middle reel turns wild, and this activates a free spins feature. Players earn a pretty incredible 25 free spins with the center reel set as completely wild on every single one of them.
Our Thoughts
There's no way to get around the fact that this game has an exceptionally plain theme with graphics that are uninspiring at best. The extremely lazy usage of the A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols with zero styling really hurts the visual representation as well. Overall, the gameplay isn't bad at all in this game, but the graphics really kill anything that they could have had going with this slot. The ending of the Romeo and Juliet play is a real bummer, but the depressing times start from the first spin with this game.
With that having been said, the method for activating the bonus feature and the way the wilds lead to re-spins is pretty atypical, and it shows that this game had some promise. If they decided to remake this game with the same payouts and features but with better graphics, they would have no problem turning it into a pretty strong title. However, as it is, they're going to have a hard time keeping people interested simply because the graphics are so poor.
