There are two major ways that a casino software developer can make an online slot stand out because of its theme. The first is if the theme is based on a brand or character from an already popular form of media like movies, television, video games or books. The second is if the theme is atypical in nature, and if the features and gameplay are tied into the theme itself, then that's even better. The latter of the two is the case with the Seasons slot by Yggdrasil, and it provides players with an innovative experience based on four seasons with four different wild features.

Game Format

As a slot, Seasons is formatted in a pretty straightforward way with five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines. Players get to manipulate their bet sizes based on choosing a coin size per line per spin, and that's always based around having a single coin per payline. With the number of paylines and the number of coins per payline fixed, betting is simplified to a large degree. Coins start as low as $0.01 for a bet size of $0.20 per spin, and they go as high as $5 apiece, so players can bet as much as $100 on each spin with this title.

Four Seasons - Four Wilds

The key point of the gameplay in this game is that players start with a random season. Once you've played at least 10 spins in any given season, you'll have a chance to randomly switch to another on your next spin. The significance of the seasons is twofold: First, you get a completely different background when the seasons change. Second, there are four available wild features in the game, and the one that's active is based on the season that you're actually playing inside of.

During the winter, the wild hare will duplicate to a second position based on what will give the player the best overall win available. In the spring, players get free respins when a wild owl appears as it flies around the screen until eventually making its way off of the edge of the screen to stop the respin feature. The summer has the wild deer which always expands in a cross pattern, meaning that you get one extra wild in each vertical and horizontal direction. Finally, there's the autumn wild fox. The foxes give multipliers, bu the size of the multiplier is determined by the number of wilds on the screen. Players can earn multipliers as high as 10x.

Free Spins Feature

The free spins symbol is a scattered bonus symbol that rewards you for three or more free spins located anywhere on the reels whatsoever. This is not a left-to-right scatter, for example. Get three of these for a set of seven free spins, four gets you 15 free spins, and five earns you 30 free spins. During the free spins feature, you'll stay inside of the season you were in when the feature triggered, and you'll have better chances of earning wilds on the reels.

The Key Payouts

There are five symbols that make up all of the top symbols. The strawberry symbol pays 1,000x for five of a kind, which is the largest regular win you can get. A 750x win is good for five of the blue or purple berries, and it's 600x for five of the acorns. Five pine cones will earn a solid 500x payout, and five of the mushrooms will be good for 400x.

On the lower end, Yggdrasil did something pretty cool with this game and used four different leaf patterns to represent the four suits in a deck of cards. The purple spade gets you 100x for five of a kind, and five of the red heart will earn 75x. You can also pick up five of the blue diamond for 50x or five of the green club for 50x as well. These are sizable, but balanced, payouts that are great when paired up with the wild features because of the increased chances of getting the payouts that are at the upper end of the scale while also providing for more frequent small and medium wins.

Our Thoughts

With Seasons, we're getting a pretty solid usage of an atypical, though seemingly generic, theme. The best way for software developers to handle these types of games, from the perspective of maximizing the gameplay experience, is to really pull the features in a direction that make sense in the context of the theme. This has been done wonderfully with this game, and it shows that Yggdrasil is going in the right direction with how they're gearing their gameplay values around what the players are experiencing visually.
