The legend of werewolves goes back centuries, and the Wolf Hunters slot by Yggdrasil Gaming brings the concept to life in an old, city landscape. There are two hunters, a man and a woman, and they stand by the left and the right of the reels, respectively. You'll see them attack werewolves on the reels, and the results of those fights will lead to features and chances for substantial payouts, which helps to make this a particularly immersive title.

Format and Layout

The base layout for this game offers five vertical reels with three horizontal rows and a static set of 20 paylines that cannot be changed and that only pay from left to right. You'll also notice three meters (the bottom-left, bottom-right and top-middle), but we'll look at those down below.

You can change the size of your coins to manipulate your total bet size, but you cannot change how many coins are being wagered, so this leads to a pretty easy-to-use system. The minimum wager comes from $0.005 coin sizes for $0.10 per turn. At the upper end, you can make that coin size as much as $5 for a $100 maximum bet size as well. With plenty of options in between, it's easy to find a bet size that fits what you're comfortable with.

Sticky Wild Re-spin Feature

A key feature that drives a lot of the gameplay for this title has to do with the wild symbols. They do not give their own specific payouts for combinations of wilds. However, what they do have going for them is that getting any wild on the reels gives a free re-spin with all wilds held sticky. On top of that, any new wilds you get on the game board are held in place as well for yet another re-spin at no cost, and this continues until no new wild symbols show up.

The Werewolf Symbols

The long-term features are primarily driven by the werewolf symbols. When one shows up, a hunter (chosen at random) will attack it. If the hunter wins the fight, then its meter is increased by one, and the big werewolf meter at the top has its health lowered by one. Both of these sets of meters drive their own features, as you will see below.

Hunter Free Spins Mode

If you get the bonus symbol on the first and fifth reels at the same time, then you get 10 free spins. During this set of free spins, the hunters are more likely to win their fights, but there's nothing else that makes this set of free spins stand out too much. It's a mid-level bonus round that offers a reasonable value.

During the free spins mode, you can get power-ups. Each power-up offers an additional two free spins and gives expanding wilds either vertically or to the left.

Another way to trigger this feature is to get one of the hunter's meters completely full. If you do this, then you'll get 10 free spins with the hunter power-up added to all 10 free turns. Whenever you begin playing, you will have 70 and 30 points, respectively, for starting values for the hunters' meters.

Slayer Free Spins Mode

If you get the werewolf's health down to zero, which is represented by the red meter over top of the game's reels, then you'll get 10 slayer free spins. The werewolves in this feature all turn into expanding wilds. That's obviously a lot of extra value considering how often those symbols appear in general.

Payouts and Prizes

A win of 500x is yours for five of the werewolf howling at the moon, and you can get 250x for five of the trap symbol as well. Wins of 200x and 150x are yours for the green potion and blue stake, respectively.

The lower end of the pay table offers four suit symbols. The red heart gets you 70x for five of a kind, and the purple spade makes it 60x for five on a payline. Five of the green club is yours for 50x, and you can get 50x for five of the blue diamond as well.

Overview

What we really enjoy about the Wolf Hunters slot is how in-depth it is. There are multiple meters to keep up with and three major characters between the werewolf and two hunters that have their own things going on that can trigger battles and free spins. The expanding wilds are a lot of fun as well, and the excitement of the sticky wild re-spins is just the icing on the cake.

While this game is obviously centered around high-action, feature-oriented gameplay, the graphics are good too, and the background and tone of the game is perfect for the theme. Yggdrasil did an excellent job putting this title together in a way that everything becomes one cohesive unit.
