Enter the fantasy castle on a quest to retrieve highly valuable gems on the slot from Avatar UX, powered by Yggdrasil’s YGS Masters platform.
PopRocks is the first in series using the PopWins reel mechanic developed in a collaboration between the two studios.
Mystical gems will guide you through your futuristic reel adventure where they will pop…
...multiply and expand to give you up to 33,614 ways to win and lead to a bonus mode that can deliver wins of up to 72,188x your bet.
Theme
Just like their first contribution to the Yggdrasil’s YGS Masters called Lilith’s Inferno, the Asian fondness for fantasy themes shines through on this creation too.
The game world is a little like the popular Netflix show Ice Fantasy. If you missed that one…
it was a full-blown Asian good vs evil tussle, and PopRocks by Avatar UX looks like it’s set in the Fire Tribe’s kingdom.
It’s a murky underworld with an ominous castle visible through the game’s transparent reels.
Giant wings hold the vertical frame of the game window with the side columns serving in a dual function to hold the symbols and display the progress through the game play and the active number of ways to win.
If you like a high drama soundtrack while you spin, then this slot will appeal to you.
It’s like a chase scene from a Disney action movie that will either entertain or annoy. It’s worth mentioning…
...however…
...that the game still was in development during testing and that there was still some work to be done on the sounds.
Betting Options
The grid is expandable and starts with a default five-reel, three row arrangement along with 486 win ways…
...the game pays both ways which is why you get 243 win ways by 2.
To get popping…
...stakes from 0.10 up to 30 must be set first.
One positive stat to mull over in the meantime is a rather generous RTP of 96.8%.
PopRocks is insanely volatile though and sessions require sitting through stacks of dead and low pay wins until the expanded reels and features are unleashed.
As with most slot games nowadays, it uses HTML5 technology which means you can play across a variety of devices including desktop, smartphones and tablets. The game looks particularly good on mobile phones so it’s good to play where you please
Moving on to the paytable…
The symbols leave no doubt about the game's origins and theme and are split into four categories – low, medium, high, and the appropriately named super high.
The lows are a bunch of Asian infused 10-A royals which make up the bulk of the wins.
Next up are the medium pays, which are four gems…
...green, blue, purple, and red.
More personality has been injected into the high pays, which include gems clasped by dragons in blue, purple, green, and golden hues. Just one symbol earns the title of super high and five of them are worth 100x the stake.
Low pay symbols are low value indeed, but when the features take off, they can have a huge effect on payout values.
Wilds complete the paytable and can substitute for any other pay symbols. One thing to keep in mind is that high and super high symbols do not appear organically from spins, but only from Pops…
.... let’s look at what that means.
Special Features
The genre for expanding game windows has proven very popular in the casino community as most mainstream providers have released games with their own take on the mechanic.
Avatar UX calls it PopWins and naturally centered gameplay around the mechanic.
Every spin starts on the default 5x3 reel set with 486 ways to win. To land a winner will require minimum three matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left or right.
All symbols in the combo will literally pop and disappear…
...only to be replaced by two new symbols in each vacated position, thus increasing the game grid and the number of win ways.
The process continues if new winning combos appear after a pop, gradually raising the grid to its maximum 5x7 format with 33,614 ways.
Once fully expanded…
...popped symbols will be replaced by single symbols only as there is no need for further double symbols.
Each pop is added to the meter on the left.
Collecting seven pops will activate the win multiplier, displayed in a bubble on top of the pop container. It will increase by x1 for every seven collected pops, no limits.
Expanding the game window to the maximum five by seven format will trigger the Bonus Mode.
A random Wild symbol will be added to the grid and the multiplier will increase in 2x steps if the Bonus Mode is active. All will reset once you don’t score any new winners after a pop.
Our Take
If we can use an analogy to describe PopRocks, it’s like traffic during the peak hour of the day. If you’re a fan of grid slots, you’ll enjoy it, yet the only downside is that there are no free spins or re-spins, and its super volatile. The game relies heavily on its Cascading Wins and its progressive multipliers. Otherwise, PopRocks chugs along at a steady pace. It’s difficult not to take it for a few spins, especially if it offers a top cash prize of 72,188x your stake on a single spin.
