When you look at any slot, you have to break down two key aspects of the game: the visual theme and the gameplay style. The visual theme of the Mr. Luck slot by Felix Games is pretty obvious with it's Irish approach. However, the gameplay style is something a bit different, and it's based completely around giving players a particularly high hit-rate with chances for nailing multiple pays on the same spin. This creates a game with a ton of action, a low volatility and a smooth experience for players.
Game Format
The layout of this slot is actually key to how the gameplay works. You'll get five reels of action, and they have three rows of symbols spread across them. There are also 10 paylines, but they pay both left-to-right and right-to-left, which means you have double the opportunity to make winning combinations on each spin. The minimum bet size is $0.10 per spin, and the maximum is $25, giving players a pretty sufficient range to pick from when it comes to the sizes of the wagers they have available.
Wild Symbols and Respins
In terms of how the gameplay goes, the most important symbol in the Mr. Luck slot is the wild symbol. It's a leprechaun, and it shows up on the second, third and fourth reels only. As such, it can't giving any winning combinations on its own. However, it always expands to cover the entire reel when it shows up, and this is a key part of the gameplay for two reasons.
First, that gives you more ways to get paid in each direction. Second, you also get a free respin of all of the other non-wild reels after your normal wins are paid, which means even more prizes than you would have gotten with just the expanding wild. Since these wilds show up fairly often in this game, you'll get a good number of respins along with the extra payouts that are a part of that.
Scattered Pots of Gold
A pot of gold shows up on each of the reels, and it's a scatter symbol in this game. Five of a kind gives you a win of 100x (as a line bet win, not 100 times your total bet size), and four gets you 20x. You can also pick up a win worth 10x for just three of a kind located anywhere on the reels. These wins are prety solid, but the scatters don't activate any type of bonus feature. Instead, they are only in play to give you yet another way to win with the regular pay table.
Other Important Payouts
The girl symbol appears on every reel as well, and she's the highest-paying normal symbol. You can get a 100x win for five of a kind, which is the same as the win for five of the scatter, but she also gives you 50x for four, which is significantly larger than the four-of-a-kind scatter payouts. Five of the horseshoe gets you 50x as well, and that drops to 20x for five of the mug full of beer. The red A, yellow K and blue Q symbols all give you a solid 15x win for five of a kind, and that drops down to 10x for five of the green J, purple 10 or orange 9.
Pay Schedule Issues
An issue we have with this game is that the pay schedule is full of pretty low pays, and there isn't really any kind of jackpot or chance for a particularly large payout without running together several expanding wilds on the same spin or respin feature. The bottom-end wins in particular are extremely low, and we fear that this might cause some kind of resentment from players. While the hit-rate is very high in this game to compensate, we aren't sure that players will care all of that much when they realize they're getting a 10x line bet win for five of a kind for three different symbols.
In Summary
If you like games with a low volatility and a particularly high hit-rate, then Mr. Luck will fit the bill in a major way. Felix Games has done a good job of crafting every part of the layout and feature set of this game to fit this style of play, and the graphics aren't bad either. There are a lot of Irish-themed slots out there, and while this game doesn't really jump out to the front of the pack in terms of graphics, it does provide a particular style of play that will appeal to a lot of players.
