Net Entertainment has a particular style when it comes to developing games that are based off of somewhat plain but underused themes in the industry. They have used this style with the Fairytale Legends: Red Riding Hood video slot in the sense that this isn't a theme that has been done a lot, but it's still a fairly common fairytale that isn't some big brand that has already been established or used several times over in other online slots. By applying their skill to this theme, they've created an excellent title that looks great and that has a very solid selection of features.
The format used in this game is about as straightforward as they come. You'll get 20 paylines spread across five reels and three rows, and you'll see that the reels themselves are transparent to give away to the graphically intense background that really fits the theme of Little Red Riding Hood walking through the forest. Coins range from $0.01 to $1, and players can wager up to 10 coins on each payline. This gives you a betting range that goes from a super low $0.20 per turn to a super high $200 per turn, leaving appropriate betting sizes for players with any size of a bankroll.
The main thing about Fairytale Legends: Red Riding Hood is that it's completely packed with features that drive a majority of the regular gameplay. To start you off, you'll have the Little Red Riding Hood wild symbol, and she shows up on the middle three reels only. If you get two or more of them on the reels, then they will hold in place after the payouts are given to give you a free re-spin. In the free spins, they show up on all of the reels making it even easier to hit big winning combinations and multi-line wins.
There are also a total of three different features that hit completely randomly when you make a spin. In the Fairy Magic Spin feature, you'll get between five and nine of the top-tier symbols in the game that appear as a cluster in the center three reels to give you a chance to hit big winnings if the right symbols line up on the first and last reels. The Fairy Surprise feature can happen at random if you don't get a win on a spin, and it moves symbols around to give you a payout that you wouldn't have received otherwise. You can also get the Fairy Wild spin that simply adds either three or four more wilds to the reels on the middle three reels, which also triggers a re-spin along the lines of what we mentioned above.
The Chest Bonus Symbol
As if those features weren't enough, there are three extra bonus rounds that you can earn thanks to the chest bonus symbol. This symbol appears on the first, middle and last reel, and when you get all three, you'll randomly get one of the following three bonus rounds. The Beware the Wolf round gives you a sort of board game type of second screen that gives you chances to hit extra wins. You can also pick up a Coin Win, which is just an extra win of a number of coins that is equal to 15 times your total bet size. Finally, you can get 10 free spins.
Important Winning Combinations
The FL symbol pays 400x for five of a kind on an activated payline, but it also pays for just two of a kind. It is the only symbol to do so. Five of the shield earns 250x, but five of the key pays 200x, so you can see the top wins don't fall off all of a sudden. Five of the rose pays players 150x, and you can also get 100x for five of the book symbol.
The A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols have been decorated in a way that really fits the fairy tale presentation, and they all pay out 60x for five of a kind.
Net Entertainment is great at making solid games out of seemingly boring themes, and this title is a good example. They've taken a classic fairy tale and turned it into a solid slot experience for players by combining great graphics and visual presentation with a balanced pay table and a lot of great features. Overall, we think this is a solid example of NetEnt's ability to put gameplay and presentation in the same title, and it's also a great example of them using a basic format as the foundation for an excellent game without having to use atypical layouts to get attention.
