Dragons have been the subject of so much work that it would be difficult to know where to start in talking about how large of a reach they have had through cultures all across the world. The Dragon Shrine video slot by Quickspin is a great example of using this theme in a way that stands out from all of the other dragon-based slots, which is quite a task. They have done a good job in puting together a low-volatility title with a lot of action built through a high hit-rate, and this game also sports solid graphics and sound.
Format and Layout
At first glance, you'll notice that this game has an atypical layout. There are five reels, but there are three rows on the first and last reel with five rows on the middle three reels. This hasn't just been done to stand out, however, because it also plays into the bonus features. Players will have 40 paylines to play on, but you choose bet sizes based on your total amount you want to wager per spin. Payouts are also paid based on multiples of your total bet size, so in the following breakdowns of the payouts, we're going to assume a bet size of $2 per spin. You can scale those values up and down as needed.
Dragon Wilds and Re-spin Feature
The dragons are not the wild symbols in this game. However, they are the best-paying regular symbols in this game with a 6x win for five of a kind or a 2x win for four of a kind. You can get payouts for just two of a kind of this symbol as well, which lowers the volatility and increases your value. The wild itself is a golden bar that says "wild" on it in blue letters, and it pays 20x for five with a 4x win for four. It also pays for four of a kind.
If you get your first reel completely full of dragons, thanks to the stacked characteristic of the dragon symbols, then you'll trigger the Dragon Re-spin Bonus Feature. All dragons and wild symbols hold into place, and you get three re-spins. More dragons and wilds on the reels hold in place as well. Your wins will be calculated at the end of the feature, so what ends up happening is that you have plenty of chances for big payouts by generating big winning combinations of dragons. What's more is that they are stacked, so your chances for multi-line wins are also more than reasonable.
Free Spins Feature
Three of the bonus scatters will get you 10 free spins. You can trigger the Dragon Re-spin Feature during the free spins with a stack of dragons on the fifth reel as well, doubling your chances of hitting it. Whenever you hit it on either the first or fifth reel, it will copy over to the other before the feature starts, which obviously dramatically increases your chances of hitting five of a kind wins. Key Payouts
Aside from the wilds and the dragons, there are two classes of symbols. The upper end of the symbol set is represented by gems. Five of the purple gem earns you 2.5x, and five of the green pays 2x. You can get 1.5x for five of the blue gem and 1x for five of the white gem. At the bottom end of the pay scale, you can find the card rank symbols. Five of the orange A pays 0.80x, and you'll get 0.70x for five of the purple K or the yellow Q. The green J is good for 0.60x for five of a kind, and you can hit five of the blue 10 for a 0.50x win.
Overview
It's obvious that the main feature with the re-spins is the key thing that drives Dragon Shrine, and Quickspin has done a fantastic job with incorporating the feature in the atypical layout. This is much different than the atypical layouts you see from some other software providers where there's not really much of a point, and it just seems like they do it for cheap attention. This slot, however, definitely brings it in the gameplay department, and the graphics aren't bad either. Overall, we think that the low-volatility and high-action gameplay will appeal to a lot of players because it offers something for everyone.
