Fruit machines are some of the oldest games that are a part of the slot world. They originated from games that would pay out in different flavors of chewing gum based on the fruit that gave you a winning combination. These prizes were put into place in order to skirt gambling laws that forbid cash payouts from being used.

Fast-forward, and we've seen tons of different types of fruit machines. Red Tiger Gaming has updated the concept with the Fruit Blox slot, a title that focuses on gameplay and that uses a similar fruit motif with futuristic graphical changes.

Format and Layout

Players will notice right away that this game is huge in terms of format. There are six reels and four horizontal rows of symbols. The "all ways" layout is also used, which means you'll have 1,296 ways to get paid on each and every spin. That lends itself to a very low volatility, a very high hit-rate and lots of opportunities for multiple wins on individual paid spins.

Despite this huge number of ways to win, betting is simplified down to the point that you're paying 20 coins per turn. To make this title even more accessible, the minimum coin size is a super-low $0.01/each, and that puts the minimum bet size for the game at the $0.20 level. The maximum bet size is at the $125 level as well.

Wild Symbols

There are wild symbols available on every reel in this game. They're worth a lot more than you might normally have a feel for because of the expanded, all-ways format. Aside from that, they do not have their own winning combinations, but they definitely bring you a lot of value.

Mega Tiles

Huge tiles of the 2x2 and 3x3 variety can be found on the reels. They count as an individual symbol for each one of the spots that they take up. They also have a special property aside from helping players to more easily get several payouts for the same symbol at one time. If you line up two of these mega symbols on adjacent reels, regardless of their sizes, then any wins that use those symbols are multiplied by a factor of two.

This multiplier concept is something that we haven't ever seen before with larger than usual tiles. Big symbols like this have been used before, but we can't ever remember them being combined with this type of multiplier element. This obviously makes what would have been some pretty significant payouts even bigger, which is clearly something that players can get behind.

Free Spins Symbols and Feature

Free spins symbols can appear in clusters on the reels as well. The number of free spins that you get is determined by how many individual symbols that you get on the reels. Note that getting mega free spins symbols beside of each other on the reels will double the number that you get from those symbols as well, and this keeps up with the spirit of the mega tiles multiplier feature that we noted up above.

During the free spins mode, one random regular symbol will be chosen ahead of time, and it will turn into a wild symbol on each spin. It's clear to see how much value that's worth and how the free spins are worth quite a bit more than their regular counterparts.

You can re-trigger this feature, and that will add additional extra wilds to the reels, which can turn pretty crazy in terms of how many wilds you're getting on each spin.

Other Symbols and Prizes

The lucky red seven symbol pays out 2x for six of a kind. You can also earn 1.6x for six of the green star or 1.4x for six of a kind combinations of the teal Liberty Bell. The blue bar, which looks like it's falling underwater, will get you a 1.2x win for six.

On the lower half of the pay table, you'll have a 1x win waiting for you for six of the purple grape symbol, and the pink watermelon is worth 0.8x for six. Six of a kind combinations of the orange or lemon get players 0.6x and 0.5x, respectively. Things end with the cherry symbol in its iconic dark red, and that symbol gets players a win worth 0.4x for six of a kind.

Keep in mind that these pays are multiplied by your total bet size and that they will get multiplied by however many matching combinations you get at the same time.

Overview

We really like what Red Tiger Gaming has done here with the fruit machine motif. The Fruit Blox slot brings this concept into the 21st century both visually but with the extended format, super high hit-rate and great features. We enjoy the free spins mode with extra wilds in particular.
