Red Tiger Gaming has brought out a lot of games that use different types of game mechanics or play styles than what players are typically used to. The Pirates Plenty slot is an example of that, and you'll need to think a little bit about how you want to play before you get started if you want the best outcome.

This is obviously a pirate-themed game that takes place out on the high seas, and everything is about trying to get as much treasure as you can with the great features and quick action that this slot provides.

Format and Layout

The layout for this game looks a bit different because there's a sixth reel. However, it's not available when you first start playing, but we'll get into that more down below. With six reels and three rows, there are 20 paylines to play on. You can't change how many of these are used, but you can pick out different bet sizes from $0.20 to $20 per spin. Likewise, your payouts are paid out in coins, and wins always go from left to right with 20 coins wagered per spin.

Strategy and the Treasure Reel

Whenever you start playing, you'll need to unlock the sixth reel, which is called the Treasure Reel, before you'll get the full value from this game. However, once you unlock it at a given level of stakes, it will stay unlocked forever.

You unlock this feature by collecting map symbols. Get a set of them (they don't all have to show up on the same spin), and this treasure reel opens up.

The best way to play this game is to decide on a given bet size and to stick to it. If you switch to a new bet size, you'll need to re-earn the treasure reel again, which means a short period with a lower RTP percentage. That's why sticking to one stake is probably the best strategy here if you can manage it.

Stacked Wild Multipliers

There are four different symbols that are ships in a bottle, and they appear on all six reels once the Treasure Reel has been unlocked. These are stacked wilds that show up three symbols high. They can also appear in a normal form or with one of three multipliers: 2x, 3x and 5x. This means that your winnings can be kicked up to another level pretty quickly, and you can more easily win several times on the same spin as well.

Ocean Spins Bonus Round

Three of more of the Ocean Spins symbol activates the Ocean Spins feature, which is essentially a free spins bonus round. The way this feature works is that players can collect keys during the feature to unlock sunken treasure chests. These chests give you extra free spins and turn low-end symbols into additional wilds, which we'll get more into down below.

Note that you need to have the treasure reel unlocked before you can get the full value from the Ocean Spins feature.

Monkey Re-spin Feature

During the regular game only (not during the Ocean Spins feature), you can get a wild monkey symbol. He acts as a wild for the initial spin, and once those pays are calculated and awarded, he'll pull all of the low-paying symbols from the reels for a free re-spin with just the high-paying ones.

Wins and Payouts

The skull symbol awards 1,000x for six of a kind and is the only symbol to pay for just two on a payline. You can earn 240x or 200x for five of the pirate's hat or cannon symbols, and the pistol and bottle give you 160x or 120x, respectively.

The four lower-paying symols are the spade, heart, diamond and club, and they all show up in full color on gold coins. This is a smart way to include them in the mix without being too generic. They can turn wild with the treasure chests in the Ocean Spins feature, but here they pay from 60x down to 30x for five of a kind of each.

Our Thoughts

We have lost count of how many games are a part of the deep sea and pirates sub-genre of slots, but Red Tiger Gaming managed to make Pirates Plenty stick out from the crowd in a huge way. Their smart use of features and the sixth reel really give this game a different style of gameplay than you're going to find anywhere else with a ton of ways to get paid.

Additionally, the graphics are better than almost any other title in the sub-genre. For the most part, this is a game that has re-defined the standards of what pirate-themed slots have to try to be.
