Typically it's a good thing when an online casino software company thinks outside of the box when it comes to themes for online slots. However, sometimes you see a theme that reminds you why there is a box in the first place, and the Winterberries slot by Yggdrasil could definitely offer that realization for many players. It has a theme of berries that exist in the winter, and it's hard to see the point of this other than berries typically aren't available in the winter.

With that having been said, the game does offer some redeeming qualities like a couple of value-packed features and solid enough graphics. The theme is a little difficult to get past, however.

Game Format

The format of the game itself is pretty normal. This is a five-reel video slot, and there are three rows of symbols. Coins range from $0.01 to $2 each, and since there are 25 locked paylines, your betting range is always $0.25 to $50 per spin. This is a large enough range for pretty much any player to be satisfied, and the increments of the coins are small enough that you'll definitely find a bet size that works for you.

Winning Combinations

Because of the atypical theme that largely falls flat, there are seven different types of berries on the reels, and there is no wild symbol. The yellow berries are the top pay, and you'll get a 500x win with five of a kind. Five of the set of three light blue berries will earn 150x. Five of the four large, red berries gets a 75x win, and five of the purple flower with orange berries earns 50x. Another win worth 50x is available for the group of smaller red berries, and the smaller dark blue/purple berries will earn 25x for five of a kind. Finally, the red and purple mixed berries also earns a 25x payout.

Column Fill Multipliers

All of the symbols in this game show up stacked on all reels. If you get a reel full of the same symbol, starting from the left, then you get a multiplier added to your wins for that spin. If you get two reels from the left full of the same symbol, then you get an additional multiplier, and so on. This is a really atypical feature that we've never seen before that we can remember, and it does something to offset the uninspired theme that players have to deal with when they play this game.

Re-spin Feature

The main feature that drives the experience for players is a re-spin feature that actually adds a lot of value because it's much more flexible than most other re-spin features that you see. When you get a winning combination on the reels, all of the symbols anywhere on the reels that matches that symbol are frozen in place by ice cubes, even if they weren't a part of the winning combination itself. Then all of the non-frozen symbols spin, and this process continues until no more new symbols show up that match the symbol that was frozen.

There are two things you need to know about this feature. First, the re-spins keep happening even if you don't get symbols in place that would add to your winning combination. As long as they match the same symbol that's frozen, they will also be frozen for further re-spins. Second, you aren't paid for each re-spin. Instead, you're only paid for the final set of winning combinations once the re-spins are over.

Overview

Yggdrasil normally puts out very high-quality games. The graphics and sound of the Winterberries slot itself are definitely of a high quality, and the features that make up this game are also very good. With all of that aside, the theme of there being berries in the winter makes little to no sense, and it really seems like someone was either really lazy with the theme they decided on for this game or was trying to be way too clever and missed the mark entirely.

The bottom line is that if the theme doesn't annoy you, then it definitely won't draw you in to longer and deeper play sessions, and that's atypical from a company that normally produces games with themes that get players interested in a major way. The gameplay is solid here, but a better concept for the game would have went a long way.
