There are certain themes in the online slot world that get used a lot. Asian themes are one of those. Because of how flooded the market is with these types of games, standing out means providing both solid graphics and great gameplay. Dragon Fury is one of GAMING1's better titles, and they do bring both solid graphics and solid gameplay in this slot. It's an above-average game all-around, but it doesn't quite break into the top-tier levels, and you'll see why in our review.
Five reels, three rows and 20 paylines may be the single most popular format for video slots in history, and that's what you're getting with this game. That's a solid start, and it's a layout that's so popular because it's so effective. When it comes to how the payouts and bet sizes are handled, however, that's where they deviate from the norm. Instead of having wagers based on values per payline, they handle everything with a set wager per spin.
You can bet between $0.20 and $5 per turn, and all of the payouts are expressed as a multiple of that total wager. This keeps things pretty simple when it comes to keeping up with how much you've won on a single spin because it's in context of everything you've wagered, not just a portion of it. We think it gives players a much better picture of their actual winnings, and we wish more software companies would follow GAMING1's lead on this.
The main bonus feature in this game is called the Dragon Tower. The wild symbol helps you to trigger this feature by getting three or more on the screen at the same time. The way this works is that you get to open doors on the tower by clicking on them. You'll get either a gold coin or a stack of boards. You get a chance to break the boards, and if you do, then you'll get a higher level in the tower with better payouts on the way. The gold coin summons the dragon, which will threaten to end your feature if you can't make it up another level in the tower on your next try. You'll accumulate winnings as you play through this feature, and they're all rewarded to you at the end.
If you're an online slots fan, then you've probably seen cascade or avalanche features at some point. The idea is that winning combinations are paid and break away to allow new symbols to drop down to take up the spaces that are left behind. This gives you a sort of free re-spin that allows you to continue getting paid over and over again during the same spin.
This is actually the key to the jackpots listed at the top of the reels. If you get enough wins on the same spin with this re-spin feature, then you'll be given a chance to pick up one of the jackpots in a side game.
The wild symbol gives players the largest win in this game, and it's the red dragon symbol. That makes sense that it's the strongest symbol in the game, and it pays 200 times your total wager for five of a kind. It'll also give you 20x or 2x for four of a kind or three of a kind, respectively.
To give you another sizable available win, five of the green dragon statue pays out a very nice 125x. Just keep in mind that this is the same as a 1,250x line bet win on most other games. Five of the blue panda pays 64x, five of the blue vase gets you 25x, and a 25x win is also awarded for five of the orange mask symbol.
On the lower end, you'll get an 8x win for five of the Q, J or 10 symbols, and the win is 4x for A and K. We think that's a little backwards, but maybe GAMING1 was trying to do something clever here. It's kind of hard to tell what the point of this was since there's no explanation given, but it probably doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things.
GAMING1 is really hit and miss when it comes to the quality of their slots, particularly when it comes to the graphics and gameplay. Dragon Fury is one of their better titles because it combines a very solid graphical motif and execution with good gameplay driven by multiple features. This is a solid game, even with the Asian theme, and we believe that a wide range of players will enjoy it because of its balanced pay table that still allows for some pretty big payouts thanks to the jackpots. Overall, it's worth checking out.
