Bird of Thunder slot review
There's a lot going on with the Bird of Thunder slot when you first open it up, but Habanero has set this game up so that you can quickly gain your bearings and see what's going on with the controls down at the bottom. It uses several different types of animals with various face paints that are in the style of Native American tribes. With totem poles and a sort of desert and mountain wilderness background, this game has a different type of visual flavor that we don't see too often.
Format and Layout
This Native American-themed slot uses five reels with three rows, but the reels look like tapestries in a way as they lay spread out from the top of the game to the bottom. You'll find 30 paylines in this game, and you can wager up to 10 coins per payline for a betting range of 30 to 150 coins. The paylines are static, and the coins start at the $0.01 level, so your betting range starts at the $0.30 level. The maximum bet size will depend on where you're playing, but it's capable of going as high as $750 based on 30 paylines with $25 coins.
Bird of Thunder Wild Symbol
The wild eagle is the main symbol in this game that will bring you the most value. The top regular payout is 1,250x for five of a kind of this symbol. You can also score 250x for four or 30x for three of a kind. It will substitute for everything but the scatter symbol. This is also the symbol that the game is named after.
Scattered Bird Totem
The scatter symbol that is not covered by the wild is a red bird totem symbol. Three or more will get you a win worth a multiple of your total bet. Three earns a 1x prize, four gets you a 3x payout, and five of this symbol pays 10 times your total wager, which is like a 300x line bet win. Because you can win this prize without the symbols being on the same payline or being left-to-right at all, it's a pretty reasonable set of prizes.
Free Spins Bonus Feature
Three or more of the scattered bird totem gets you a set of 10 free spins. These scatters do not award payouts during the free spins. Instead, every single scatter that shows up give you one extra free spins. In addition to that, for each wild symbol that shows up, it will copy itself to another random non-wild symbol to give you an extra wild. This makes it easy to really run together some serious winning combinations with so many extra wilds and opportunities for additional free spins.
Top Animal Symbols and Prizes
There are five animal symbols other than the wild and scatter that show up on the reels. They all have face paint and other decoration, and they've been designed in a very careful way that looks great. The bear is the top symbol, and five of him will get you a 1,250x win. A score of 500x is yours for five of the buffalo, and you can also win 250x for five of the snake. The owl gets you a 150x win for five on an activated payline, and the five-of-a-kind payout for the deer symbol is a solid 100x.
Low-Tier Payouts and Symbol Set
There are five card rank symbols that make up the bottom half of the pay table. However, they were made in a style with a font and presentation that fits the theme pretty well, so as much as we tend to dislike this type of symbol in slots, we feel fine with giving Habanero a pass this time.
Five of the A gets you 60x. You can win 50x for five of a kind of the K or Q symbols, and both the J and 10 are good for 40x with five of a kind.
Bird of Thunder is a slot that has a theme that we haven't seen before, and we have to give props to Habanero for that because that's a feat that's difficult to pull off in today's saturated industry where it can seem like everything's been tried over and over again. The feature set is pretty straightforward and nothing too "off the beaten path," but the duplicating wilds adds a bit of something extra to the free spins. The graphics are pretty solid in this game, and the theme is something different, but the gameplay is pretty mediocre and doesn't turn out to be anything super exciting. Overall, we give this game average to above-average ratings.
