Atlantis was a mythical city that is now located on the bottom of the northern Atlantic Ocean, and it's been the setting for a ton of movies, television shows, books, video games and other forms of entertainment. NetEnt has gotten in on the action themselves with their Secrets of Atlantis online slot, and this game brings together everything that makes the legends of this city fun with its theme. Add in some great features and a high hit-rate, and you get a recipe for a strong game overall.

Format and Layout

The format of this game is somewhat common with five reels, four rows and 40 paylines. For whatever reason, the 5x4 layout with 40 paylines is pretty much the norm, which is interesting because the 25-payline and 50-payline titles are usually on a 5x3 layout. Regardless, this slot is based on bet sizes of 20 coins, and you can multiply that by a factor of up to 10. Coin sizes go up to the $1.00 level from $0.01 on the lower end, so you get a pretty good betting spread. The minimum bet size for this game overall is only $0.20, and it goes up to $200 per spin. Obviously this will suit any type of player because there are a tons of intermediate values to help you find the exact bet size that works the best for you.

Highlight Feature

While this title is feature-packed, the first feature you should know about is the Highlight Feature. On every spin that you play, you'll randomly have one, two or three of the middle three reels (the second, third and fourth reels) that light up. If you get the lights to cover all three of these reels at once, then you get a re-spin with colossal symbols activated, which gives you more payouts on top of whatever you received on your original spin. The way this works is that the middle three reels combine to turn into one giant symbol that acts as if the middle three-by-four portion of the game is all the same stacked symbol.

This makes five of a kind wins extremely easy and multiple five of a kind wins fairly easy, so you can really run up a major win in a short period of time if you trigger the Highlight Feature.

Nudge Wild Symbols

The mermaid is a wild symbol in this game, and she always appears as a long, standing symbol that covers four spots. If she shows up anywhere, she'll be nudged either up or down to cover the whole reel. She can also be the Colossal symbol on the middle three reels and retain her nudge feature during the Highlight Feature, which means you'll get some absolutely enormous multi-line wins thanks to effectively having the three middle reels be entirely wild on the free re-spin.

Regular Game Payouts

There are a total of seven regular paying symbols in this game, and they're essentially broken up into three groups. In the first group all by itself is the clam with the pearl symbol. This pays 400x for five of a kind, and it's the best-paying symbol in the game.

The second group consists of the red diamond symbol, which pays 70x for five of a kind. You can pick up 60x for five of the green teardrop gem, and you'll also have 50x for five of the blue, hexagon gem available. What you'll notice about these three gems is that all three of them are encased in what looks like different sea creatures. That's a very subtle visual touch that is characteristic of the care that Net Entertainment puts into building games like Secrets of Atlantis.

The third and final group of symbols are the grab, the turtle and the jellyfish. They follow the same red/green/blue ranking as the three gym symbols, which are actually modeled after these three sea creatures. All three of these pay the same 15x for five, 6x for four and 3x for three of a kind, making it easy to remember the wins for the lowest three symbols in the game.

Our Thoughts

In all honesty, the deep sea theme has been done so many times in the online slot world that you really have to knock it out of the park to get us very interested. Net Entertainment has managed to do that with the combination of great graphics and solid features, especially with the highlights feature and the colossal symbols that cover the middle three reels. Along these lines, we're fairly impressed with how they have handled this theme, and we recommend that people who like straightforward games with solid gameplay and a high hit-rate check this game out, because the low-volatility experience is perfect for players who prefer this play style.
