TopGame's The Catfather online slot is loosely based on a set of cats playing out The Godfather. The emphasis is on "loosely" here, and you'll mostly just see cats posing like humans with hats, glasses and other kinds of clothes. The theme is great for people who like these animals, but it doesn't offer much in terms of excitement otherwise. With that having been said, it's definitely an atypical theme, and at least it's not yet another Egyptian- or Asian-themed game, which is nice.
Game Format
This game uses a somewhat dated format with five reels, three rows and nine paylines. This is the layout used by much older games, titles much older than this one for sure, but a change in pace isn't always a bad thing. Coins range from $0.01 to $0.50 apiece, and you can bet up to 10 coins on each payline. The maximum bet size is $90 per spin, but it goes as low as $0.09 per turn, and that's enough for super low stakes penny players to be comfortable.
It's worth noting that all symbols pay in both directions in this game, so you're going to get a higher hit-rate and a lower volatility than you might first expect from looking at the features and payouts.
Wild Symbols
The wild symbol with two black cats in a cardboard box is pretty important in this game because it offers the largest wins on its own while also offering chances for multi-line payouts. If you get a wild on one of the middle three reels, it can expand at random to cover the entire reel. Otherwise, the wilds appear on every reel normally.
The top regular win in this game is for five of the wilds. It gives you a 5,000x payout. You can also score 250x for four. Something interesting about the wilds is that it pays for as few as just one of a kind, so if you get a wild on the first or last reels, you're guaranteed a win.
Scatters and Free Spins
The mouse who is tied up and wearing glasses pays 20 times your entire bet for five, 5x for four and 2x for three. This is a scatter symbol, so he can show up anywhere on the reels in any position to pay. He also triggers a set of free spins if you get three or more. Three earns 10 free spins, four earns 15 free spins and five gives you 25 free spins.
There is a trade-off in features during the free spins bonus round. On one hand, you lose the expanding wild symbols on the middle three reels. On the other hand, all of your payouts are hit with a fairly large 4x multiplier. That increases the largest win in the game to 20,000x for five of the wilds, though it does make it a bit harder to reach.
Regular Payouts
There are a total of eight regular symbols in this game, and that lends itself to more frequent payouts than the games that have 12-15, or more symbols, on the reels that pay. Along these lines, because they pay out more often, the prizes are a bit smaller with a flatter payout structure than what some players will be used to.
Five of the orange cat pays 200x, and five of the blue tough guy cat pays 100x. You can get 70x for five of the cool cat wearing sunglasses, a flat-billed cap and a gold chain. The cat with the big, blue eyes and purple hat pays 35x for five, and five of the robber grumpy cat pays 30x.
Three other symbols pay out as well. The A, K and Q symbols are stylized like "bling" with diamonds and gold. The A pays 25x for five, and five of the K earns 20x. Five of the Q rounds out the bottom end of the payouts with 15x.
Our Thoughts
Our major gripe about this game is that you lose one of the most important features of the game, the expanding wilds on the middle three reels, when you go into the bonus feature. The 4x multiplier is nice, but we would have preferred to see a lower multiplier with the expanding wilds intact.
Aside from that, The Catfather online slot provides what's definitely an atypical theme, and it shows that TopGame is at least looking for innovation in one area. Their games aren't known for being all that outstanding when compared to international competition, but they've done a pretty decent job with this game. The feature set is solid, and the top payout of 5,000x for a symbol that expands on three reels during the regular game is pretty cool to see.
