If you have spent much time at all in the online slot world, then you know that there are a ton of games that have Asian-inspired themes. The Sheng Cai You Dao video slot, powered by Skywind, is one of these. Gameplay for this title centers around trying to hit the bonus feature, which is where a large part of the game's value comes from. The graphics have been done in a pretty solid way, but it's difficult to decide if it's enough to make the game stand out in this particular sub-genre.

Slot Format and Layout

There's a Chinese structure that looks like an open-faced building that includes five reels of action. Three rows of symbols go across the game board horizontally, and you'll always have 25 paylines that you're playing on. This number of paylines cannot be changed, not that you would want to change them to begin with, but this simplifies the betting and controls.

Speaking of betting, the controls for choosing your bet size are about as straightforward as they could possibly be. You'll use arrow buttons to the left and right to pick through a variety of different bet sizes. The total bet and the individual line bet are both listed to minimize confusion. You can wager starting at $0.25 per turn ($0.01 on each payline), and the maximum bet will depend on which casino you're playing with.

Wild Symbols

The yin-yang symbol is the normal wild in this slot, and it will make an appearance on the third, fourth and fifth reels only. As such, it does not get its own payouts on the pay table. With that having been said, there is also a second wild symbol that only shows up during the free spins, and it adds a bit of value. We'll look at it below when we discuss how the free spin feature is triggered and how it works in general.

Scattered Chinese Symbol

The Chinese symbol in gold on a green background is this game's scatter symbol. Five of a kind is worth 100 times your total bet, which is like a 2,500x line bet payout. You can also score 10x for four of a kind and 2x for three of a kind with this symbol. It pays no matter where it appears on the reels, and it doesn't have to be from left-to-right on consecutive reels like what you see with the scatters in some titles.

This is also the only symbol in the game that the wild does not substitute for.

Free Spins Bonus Round

When you have three of the above scatter symbol appear on the board all at once, no matter where they are at, you will activate the free spins bonus round. During this round, you'll be able to have a golden yin-yang symbol on the second and fourth reels. Winning combinations that use one of these can get a random multiplier worth 3x or 5x on their payout, which means chances for some major wins.

You'll always get 10 free spins to start no matter how many of the scatter you use to kick off the feature. When you get at least three scatters on the reels during the bonus round itself, then you will add another eight free turns to your total.

Symbols and Key Payouts

The golden dragon symbol pays out 800x for five of a kind, and it's the best-paying non-scatter symbol that the game has to offer. It appears on a purple background. The golden boat on a red background gets you 350x for five on a payline, and you can also earn 200x for five of a kind of either the three golden coins or the golden ingot. The golden Chinese symbol on a purple background will earn you 150x when you line up five of a kind as well.

For the card rank symbols, all five of them pay 100x for five, which makes it really easy to remember those particular payouts. This goes for the blue A, the red K, the green Q, the cyan J, the orange 10 and the purple 9.

Overview

Unfortunately for Skywind, the gameplay of their Sheng Cai You Dao slot probably isn't enough to stand out in a meaningful way among the overwhelming numbers of slots that use fairly generic Asian themes. There's no story here and nothing for players to really sink their teeth into, and while the graphics look pretty good, they aren't really enough to carry this game past the initial impression.

We would have liked to see more features or some sort of story to set this game apart from all of the others out there, but as it stands, it's pretty generic on the gameplay side of things. That's unfortunate because it really looks great, and it plays in a particularly smooth way with a reasonable hit-rate.
