For a long time, the online slot industry has been operating under a typical video slot format that uses five reels and three rows. This is an extension of the 3x3 format used from classic slots, which itself is an extension of the 3x1 format of the original classic slots. Red Rake Gaming has broken this mold with their Wildcano slot, and they've done it in a way that gives players excellent graphics and sound with a smart use of a different type of format in the sense of how they have incorporated it into every aspect of the game.
A Different Slot Format
When you look at this game, you're looking directly down at a volcano. There are three circles of symbols that surround it, and you'll see lines going out up, down, left, right and diagonally from the center of the volcano across those three circles. These make up eight paylines that are three symbols long. However, they also meet across the opening of the volcano to give you four paylines that are six symbols long, and this gives you an opportunity to make massive wins.
You will be one coin on each of the eight regular paylines in this game. This leads to a minimum bet size of $0.08 and a maximum bet size of $200. The betting is a little odd, but it fits the game pretty well.
Magma Feature
You can randomly get a number of features in this slot. One of those is the Magma Feature. When you get this, you'll see two random paylines completely fill with lava. The symbols on those paylines will burn away, and all six symbols will be turned into a random matching symbol. There's a chance to get a six-of-a-kind win here, but you'll always get two three-of-a-kind wins when this feature triggers.
Pyroclast Feature
At random, you can see pyroclasts should from the volcano to hit various random symbols on the symbols that are on the eight paylines. This burns through the symbols and replaces them with wilds. In short, this is a volcano-themed random wild feature, but the graphics look really great. It's cool to see how Red Rake Gaming has incorporated the volcano motif into every aspect of play.
Earthquake Feature
Again, there is another random feature here based on an earthquake. You can trigger the Earthquake feature in this game after any spin that does not give you at least one winning combination. One, two or all three reels can rotate after the earthquake to give you a chance to hit wins you wouldn't have received otherwise. This is much like a nudge feature from games with a rectangular format, but again, it fits the volcano concept very well.
Sacrifice Feature
If you get the sacrifice feature, then symbols in paylines that did not have winning combinations will be pushed off into the volcano to make room for new symbols to give you an extra chance to win. It's a neat feature that doesn't really have a matching concept for games with a traditional format outside of the idea of a free re-spin.
Bonus Symbols and Free Spins
If you get three bonus symbols located anywhere on the eight paylines, then you'll get a set of free spins. You can get random bonus symbols as well, and the number of free spins you earn is random.
Winning Combinations
Players have two key ways to win in this game. You can win by lining up three of a kind on a single payline, or you can win with six of a kind across two paylines that are directly across from each other. The black panther symbol is the wild, and six of a kind gets you a 8,000x win. Alternatively, three of a kind pays 240x. You can win 4,800x for six of the diamond or 160x for three, and six of the lucky red seven pays out 3,600x. Six of a kind of the different fruit symbols pay between 1,600x and 1,200x, and the four low-tier, card rank-like symbols pay between 800x and 400x for six as well.
Our Thoughts
Wildcano is a cool game with a much different format than we've seen before. However, it doesn't just let the circular layout define it. Instead, it offers tremendous graphics that are on par with the best that the industry has to offer, and it has a great set of fun features as well. This is definitely a feature-driven game with chances to win some pretty large payouts with the six-of-a-kind wins, and it's worth checking out. Overall, this is a tremendous title that Red Rake Gaming has done a wonderful job with, and we definitely think this game will be emulated by other software companies as a result of how strong of a title it is.
