Yes, we have another “Book of …..’ slot for you!

We lost count at some three dozen of this type that all go back to the original Book of Ra from Novomatic, released in 2004.

That is an eternity in our fast-moving online world but also proof that the pay mechanic and high volatility of the game engine is still as attractive today. A maximum win of 5,000x the stake certainly contributes to that attraction.

However, Spearhead Studios, formerly GiG Games, the self-proclaimed ‘game changers’, has gone one step further and added a twist in the base game that so far none of the other titles has.

As expected, the slot is adventure-themed with the hero being Lara Jones as she enters an ancient Mayan temple. The archaeologist turned treasure hunter is on a quest to find the mystical Book of Souls, which can unlock the fabled riches hidden inside the giant stone structure.

There is, of course…

...a baddie featured on the reels who tries to stop Lara from taking home the riches. The game window sits in front of the entrance to the hidden temple with the pay symbols resting on stones that need to be removed to gain entry.

The stones shake on every new tumble of pay symbols, while a suspenseful soundtrack heightens the expectations to find the vast treasures.

Betting Options

Book of Souls is a non-progressive video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed pay lines. Bet sizes start at a low-roller friendly 0.10 credits while high-rollers can crank that up to an appropriate 100 credits.

High volatility does not mean low RTP as the studio shows with the 96.90%, they have given their latest creation. Going with the modern times, the game is mobile optimized but looks and plays just as good on a desktop PC.

What about the symbols?

All pay symbols are held on giant stones that tumble onto the game window instead of the usual reel spin.

The low end consists of Mayan-style card royals from 10 to A, while the premium symbols are two Mayan artifacts, the baddie fielding a handgun and Lara Jones herself. Pays for a single five of a kind range from 10x to 500x the stake. The intricately designed ancient Book of Souls is the Scatter and Wild symbol on the reels.

Special Features

Watch out for the venomous snakes as they can appear before the start of any spin in the base game. They will add 3 to 10 random wilds to the screen on the following spin to potentially create more winning combinations.

Hit a minimum three scatters anywhere on the reels to trigger 10 free spins, which can be re-triggered indefinitely.

...a coin win of 2x, 20x, and 200x is awarded for three, four and five scatters. Before the bonus round starts, one of the nine regular pay symbols is selected as the special symbol.

When sufficient symbols land on a free spin, they will expand vertically to cover the entire reel and award wins for all pay lines, which are paid on top of any potential line wins.

It will need a minimum of three low-paying symbols or minimum of two premium symbols anywhere on the screen to see them expand and award a win.

This is, of course…

...the moment where the slot can produce the maximum win on a single spin. The selected special symbol has to be Lara Jones and if five land in view across the reels, they will expand to pay 10x the single line win for a five-of-a-kind, which is 500x the stake, resulting in a total of 5,000x the stake.

Our Take

‘Book of…’ fans will surely welcome this new addition to their list of favorite games as it carries on the legacy of the original from Novomatic. Plus, the random feature is not just adding a twist that can produce big wins, but also makes sure that Spearhead Studios differentiates itself from the other copied ‘Book of…’ titles.
