Lots of online slots use fruit symbols in one way or another. The fruit motif originated with old, three-reel, mechanical games that would give prizes in the form of different flavors of gum based on which fruit you used to get a winning combination. The Fruit-O-Matic slot by FUGA Gaming uses some fruit symbols, but they aren't really the traditional ones you'd see in those older styles of games. Instead, they're the basis for a bit of a tropical motif with tons of action.
If you've spent some time in the online slot world, then you know that 40-payline games almost always have five reels and four rows. This has to do with making the number of lines symmetrical on the reels. However, this particular slot uses five reels, three rows and 40 paylines, so it's a little outside of the bounds of what's usual in that way, but it's not something most players are going to care too much about.
You can adjust the number of paylines, but it's best for you to keep it at 40 for the best average payouts respective to your bet size. You also have different sizes of coins you can pick from starting at $0.01 and going up to $2. The resulting betting range goes from $0.40 to $80 per spin, and that means players at all different levels will be able to get a bet size that they're comfortable with.
There's a metallic toucan bird that can appear on the third reel with a red background. This triggers an interesting feature that we can't remember seeing anything like before. What it will do is swap positions with a symbol that's adjacent to it in order to give you a better win than what you would have received otherwise. It's a fun feature that can give you an additional payout, but there's not much to it from a functional standpoint.
The main feature in this game centers around a set of respins. You can get this feature by picking up at least three of the respin symbol on the reels, no matter where they land. These symbols will then switch to being either the stacked wild, the X wild or the secret symbol.
The secret symbol will turn into a random symbol on the pay table, so if you have more than one, they will all turn into the same symbol to give you a slightly better chance of getting paid combinations. The stacked wild appears in stacks of up to six, and they substitute for everything but the watermelon symbol. Finally, each of the X wild will give a multiplier that increases by one for each spin, and you can get a multiplier as high as 7x along these lines. Unfortunately, it will not substitute for the watermelon.
The watermelon symbol is the top-paying fruit symbol in the game, but it's really important for a couple of other reasons. First, it doesn't get picked by most of the features, including the wilds, and that's something to take note of because its behavior is different than what you normally see for a regular-paying symbol. Second, it's the only symbol in this slot that gives you a win for just two of a kind.
Five of the watermelon symbol gives a strong 2,500x prize, and four is still worth 1,000x, one of the top four largest payouts in the game. You can also pick up 250x for three of a kind, and a two-of-a-kind combination is worth 20x.
There are five other fruit symbols in this slot. Five of the pineapple gives a solid 1,500x payout, and you can win a 1,200x prize for five of the mango. The star fruit earns players 500x for five, and the green and brown kiwi is worth 400x for five on a payline. Finally, the cherry symbol rounds out the fruit symbols with a 250x win for five of them.
The four card rank symbols have decent payouts considering they're for the lowest wins in the game. Five of a kind of the A symbol gets players 200x, and it's 150x for five of the K. Likewise, you'll pick up a 100x payout for five of either the Q or the J symbols on an activated payline.
Fruit-O-Matic by FUGA Gaming shows that you can have a fruit-based game without everything being about a throwback to classic, three-reel titles. The mix of features is kind of interesting because they don't work like what you typically find in online slots, but the fact that the watermelon is excluded from the wilds and other features is a bit of a drag. With that having been said, this game has an aggressive pay table, and although the graphics aren't all that great, the gameplay itself is pretty solid.
